Remember back in the old forum days when Jarret would would start those threads just attacking religion? Those were some heated debates.

Quote from: YoDoug post_id=11362 time=1621454711 user_id=58There is a whole host of info showing our systems are made to eat and digest ANY FOOD WE CAN FIND.

Fiss.

So, if evolution favors the highest adaptability and strongest survival, consider this. Meat and eggs contain choline and L-carnitine. There are gut bacteria that feed off of these. The more you eat, the more of those bacteria you have. When the bacteria consume these they produce TMA. Your liver takes the TMA and turns it into TMAO. TMAO travels through your blood stream and causes atherosclerosis of the arteries. This is the hardening of the artery walls. When combined with the cholesterol in animal products it starts to build up. The two of the three most prescribed drugs in the US are for these chronic illnesses. Hardly seems like evolution would favor this result as the strongest and best adaptation. So yes, you can digest animal products, but given the negative byproducts and health consequences that come from it, I would hardly say we are designed to eat and digest any food we can find.

The body manufactures L-Arginine keep arteries pliable. If you need more than what your body can produce it's a very low cost supplement.

You should not have to take supplements to overcome negative effects of the food you eat, just stop eating the food causing the issues to keep your body in balance. Often most people don't know there is an issue until significant damage has been done. Also, there were no low cost supplements available a few hundred years ago, let alone through millions of years of evolution.

Rich L-Arginine food sources include red meats, poultry, and dairy products.

The best foods for high quality B vitamins are meats. Vegans need to find B supplements as that diet is low on B vitamins. Supplementation is fine, though the best source is red meats.

I figured someone would bring up B12. Here is a few things about B12. It is not made by animals, it is made by bacteria. Animals get it by consuming vegetation that has bacteria on it. That is why primates in the wild are not B12 deficient. On the other hand primates in captivity are often B12 deficient. The same goes for livestock. When livestock are fed grain versus grass fed they are often supplemented with B12. As far as humans getting B12 naturally, our modern hygienic lifestyles don't allow it. Back in the day when humans were foragers and ate fruit off the tree and veggies from the ground without washing/sterilizing them like we do now, they were not B12 deficient. Pull a carrot out of the ground, wipe off the dirt, and enough B12 will remain to get your needs. If you are not comfortable with that, then take a supplement. The Almond milk I use is B12 fortified. My B12 numbers when tested are just fine.

I see a difference in the two reasons for supplementation we have discussed here. One (B12) is to fill a deficiency because of available sources of foods. The other is to overcome or compensate for negative effects of other foods (meat) in the diet. I won't try to downplay the negative effects of B12 deficiency, however when compared to the chronic heart disease caused by diet rich in animal products, it is barely a blip on the health radar. For me personally I will always change my diet before I have to take meds/supplements to deal with chronic disease. A few years back my doc gave me a warning that he was going to put me on high blood pressure meds and statins if I didn't change. I also was stuck taking heart burn meds everyday. Today I take no meds at all .

^^ (YoDoug) I wasn't implying you, rather vegans in general. Those 'in the know' B12 is no issue. Many are not.

And I know there are exceptions in all walks of life but,...

My brother-in-law's sister died of cancer last summer. She was diagnosed over 10 years earlier, beat it then (chemo, etc.). It came back and she couldn't win her battle this round. She was early 60's and a lifelong vegan. And I mean lifelong (since her teens). All those thankgivings watching her avoid turkey, ham. I thought then, "Nah. No thanks".

Strict draconian vegan diet over 50 years. Didn't smoke or drink alcohol. Fate. Eventually in one form or another, we all cannot avoid it.

Sorry to hear of your families loss. That is why I say health is not a zero sum game. Even the heathiest living and eating can still get sick. There are other factors like stress, genetics, and environmental toxins that also have an impact on health.

I use the term vegan too often when I should be saying whole foods plant based diet. There is a difference between the two. There are times when I am staying very strict to a whole foods plant diet and then there are times when I am eating processed vegan food. The struggle to eat healthy is real.
