I don't know how employers are supposed to hand drug use in Cali
Weed is legal so a dirty test does not imply illicit drug use
They still do a prehire test, but I don't know what they screen for

I'm not sure how Cali handles it, but there are some places here that still test and wont hire you in Washington State after a positive test.

Are you willing to show up every day with the attitude of adding value to our machining operations?

Are you willing to lean new software, tactics, or new machines you're unfamiliar with?

Can you follow work instruction?

Can you pass a drug test?

If someone is willing to do all these, you'd better hire them

I would not waste my time asking questions like that . today's world you will just get the answer they think you want to hear. ask questions like name some g codes and there functions or decimal equivelent of 1/2" 3/8, drill size for some common threads?? IDK
have been a manager hiring and have been lied to more times than not.
maybe at interview exit walk them to there car, if it looks like it would not make it two blocks might tell you something. lol
its tough to judge on the fly

Remember back in the late 90's there was a TV show called The Pretender. I have always said hiring skilled trades, especially machine shops employees is weeding out the pretenders. There are shops workers that spend enough time in and around skilled workers to be able to "talk the talk". They called over the programmers/setup person enough times for help and watched/listened to them enough to make it sound like they know how to do it. Those are the ones you have to carefully weed out.

Role play some typical scenarios in your shop and ask him/her how they would handle those scenarios and why. Especially ask how they would handle a mistake made by someone higher up on the food chain say a Programmer.

One possible scenario could be lets say the person is proving out a program and they notice T75 has 3 operations in it and the last operation is using a different H and D offset than the other two operations. There were no notations in the setup sheet about this. Ask how they would handle that.

That will tell you more than some random G-Code or SFM question IMHO.

Hell, everything I've said in this topic has been shot down.  I'm privileged to have worked amongst some really good people.  The people who can't do what they claim, usually get themselves fired.

Can you not just hire someone "temp" but if they work out as they say they can, make them a full time employee?  If they're fuctards, just tell tell them the temp position has expired?

Seems like we're in a shitty place as a country when all the people you are trying to hire just Lie

Many questions are just ambiguous at best....

Ask them if they can explain how G41/G42 function?

If they understand how it works, they have a grasp on something at least

ask them if they can pull up their pants and tie their shoes

I remember one question  & it was something like "How would you approach a feature that has a callout of true position of zero?"
My answer was "Hope it has a MMC callout".
Was a good question

Are you just limited to questions?  Can you test them by putting them at the machine and have them square up a vise or something of that nature?  A company that I just accepted a position with had an actual test where the candidate was supposed to program a sample part.  They had it setup where you could do it online somehow, I guess I either impressed(or BS'd) them good enough with my phone interview that they decided to skip the test and hire me anyways.  Either way I thought it was a good way to see how a potential candidate would work through something...

Simple.

feelings are important. How are you feeling today?

Have you or are you affiliated with any Law enforcement agency?

Do you have any aggressive tendencies?

If an Old Man came up and told you "you are an Idiot let me show you the correct way" would your feelings be hurt?

Did you learn Machining in your Parents Basement?

How many Fingers do you have? Do you intend to keep them?

Do you really think Time and a half means Uncle Sam only keeps time in taxes?

Do you drink?

Have you considered starting Drinking?

What is the best Bourbon?

Can you swim?

Have you ever run a Wire EDM?

Do You smoke Dope??

Do you like Mexican Food?

Can you Grill?

(just for Smit)

Have you ever jumped out of a Plane?

Can you Scuba?

Have you or will you ever vote for Trump?

Sorry bout the jokes.
seriously.
Worked at a Tool and die shop. New guy came in talked the boss into a Frenzy. Boss gave him top Dollar and a full 25 station carbide die to Build. He told the Boss 12 weeks. The Boss was impressed.
11 weeks in the guy is a no show all week.
went back to check his work.

He squared a few blocks. collected 11 weeks of pay.

We hired a guy from another shop,Boss went all out to get him 17 years experience and Boss granted him Top Pay and 4 weeks Vacation to start. He spent all day leaning on tables and completing nothing. made the rounds to each guy to talk and made 9 trips to the bathroom everyday. Pretty sure our competitor who my Boss talked him away from....Thanked My Boss.

You need to trust your Instinct. Hopefully you get some good surprises.

You are looking for a Diamond in the rough.

Sometimes just believing in a Kid gives them the edge.

Good Luck.

I would say FU on temp. you are asking for a committment but not giving one.
How many places have you worked for that waved the $$$ Carrot in your face and not backed it up?
Once they get you in it's uh uh. we don't have the earnings this year.
been their done that.
Can't blame a kid for being smarter than me.

Also some companies are adept at the temp hiring...They count on it .

I've seen one company hire guys in at top dollar and then dump you in 89 Days so they got their contract out.

and you didn't make 90 days per the contract.

They hired 10 guys in and layed off 10 guys off. Promising Long term employment. Just to hit their Date.

They skirted Indiana law by being based in Detroit.....Fuck Detroit!!

What's a big mistake you have made? How did you go about fixing it?

What is the last improvement you implemented at your previous job? Have them explain it in depth to get the feeling that they actually brought the idea or process up.
