The link is behind a paywall. I don't know if it will work

This is a crazy slippery slope

QuoteApple announced Thursday is it planning to scan all iPhones in the United States for child abuse imagery, raising alarm among security experts who said the plan could allow the firm to surveil tens of millions of personal devices for unrelated reasons.

In a blog post, the company confirmed reports saying that new scanning technology is part of a suite of child protection programs that would "evolve and expand." It will be rolled out as part of iOS 15, which is scheduled for release sometime in August.

You think that's a slippery slope, how about the new bill that will put a tester in every vehicle to test if you're drunk or not?

closer and closer to "Minority Report", if you don't know what that is, it's a movie with Tom Cruise where they arrest you before you commit the crime based off your personal data...ie phones, computers,.....
:sofa:

Is that the same bill that also allows them to test pilot a program to charge everyone a tax per mile driven?

Who knows. They way they structure bills is moronic. Always trying to slip something in unnoticed amongst a ton of other bloat and 1 good thing.
Say a bill allows the cure for cancer to be free and available everywhere also has something in it that allows the government to take your entire salary for a year gets voted down simply on the salary issue, the media will say that this person or that person voted no on free cancer cure.

For real.
It's not much of a stretch to imagine the same technology used to 'find' those materials on someone's phone could also be used to 'plant' those same kinds of materials.

Sure, everyone would be in favor of catching people associated with the abuse of children, but this kind of technology has the potential to be abused in a way that could ruin a completely innocent person's life.

Slippery slope indeed...
