Shooting Illustrated

QuoteThe company created an entirely new cartridge that, while smaller than the 9 mm, skews heavily towards it in terms of power. Dubbed the 30 Super Carry, the new cartridge has a .312-inch bullet diameter, although it's the same length as a 9 mm. The narrower circumference, though, means more rounds will fit inside a given frame, all else being equal. It also means that, in short order, we'll be seeing guns specifically designed for the Super Carry that are smaller and lighter than current 9 mm pistols. In other words, we'll have new guns of .380 ACP size, but with 9 mm muzzle energy.

I have a 9mm, it's a safe queen, dumped my .380ACP almost 10 years ago....I just always have my .45 with 230 grains of powa'

Just seems to me this is a solution in search of a problem...have to see how the ballistics look but I'm in the meh camp currently

My EDC kit is nearly 10lbs. Leatherman, 9mm (depending on time of year it's either a 4 1/2 FMK 9C G2 with 10+1 or a Springfield XD9 full size 10+1), 2 extra magazines, wallet, etc...

I got on a scale in front of my wife and it read 172. She's says WTF? I told her I'm nowhere near that... watch this... I went and changed into what I normally weigh myself in (T-Shirt, Gym shorts, and ankle socks). I get on the scale and it comes up 162.5-ish. When I was at my heaviest March of 2020, I was pushing 200 with my EDC.

She now understands why I like to keep my weight where it is. My knees can't handle 200. Too heavy. So... if I can drop a pound or two, I'll at least entertain the idea.

In my county I can only CCW between .380 up to a .454-ish ... so you guys that want to CCW your Desert Eagle .50 Cal are out of luck in my county. That wasn't always the case and the CCW trainer said there was usually one guy in every class that wanted to CCW the Desert Eagle. Not sure why they narrowed it down.

My wife has a friend that wants to CCW but she can't handle the recoil of a .380... she'd had carpal tunnel problems in the past so she'd prefer her .22 even though there's no stopping power. She's deadly accurate with that thing. Like she'll put a full magazine in an eye socket or nasal cavity (you pick :O ) WITH an elevated heart rate. Every single time.

My ex-wife....she can't handle anything with recoil and she's about the same, carries a .22 but she'll put someone's eye out with it...end of the day, shot placement is just as important

I read an article the other day, I'll see if I can did it up

2 main line ammo makers are loading 22 rounds optimized for defense.

Federal Personal Defense Punch 22LR is one, don't remember the other

Something else I read years ago..  the lowly 22 kills more people every year
that any other caliber. Don't know if that was/is true or not though

mayday

I have both
a SAR 9, heavy gun
and a 22 Beretta, small and lite. Woodchuck weapon
I dont carry either one

HTM01

got a 6 shooter from my father came with a 22 mag cylinder but a little too long barrel to carry

Correct. More and more people are Concealed Carrying today. Many however either don't like or can't handle the recoil of larger calibers so the ammo companies have been putting some of their larger caliber technology to work in their .22LR selections.

It woudl not surprise me one bit that .22LR kills more people than any other caliber. Few take i t seriously. They think it's a toy.
Quote22LR is also one of the most underestimated rifles. It can really be efficient tool for MIL/LEO use. Russian OMON for instance found this out very hard way during 1999-2000 Grozny/Chechenia. Even titanium plate vests do not really help against precise bullets- coming in completely silent. Typical 40gr RN lead bullet can penetrate over 30cm/12" ballistic gelatin. Presumably it is not fun at all to catch one with unprotected neck, for instance.

I can go t a 100 yard range with my .22LR and simulate 450-ish yard work with a .308. At a fraction of the cost.

sounds like a 32 mag acp. why not? they already have 32 bullets just need the longer casing, why make another diameter, just curious..
:sofa:

a 22 round to the back of the skull has long been the execution mode of choice for gangland hired killers
The noise is minimal, and the bullet bounces around inside the skull killing the victim.
The bullet is usually damaged so badly it cannot be matched to the weapon that fired it.

I believe the actual bullet diameter for both the new 30 Super Carry and the 32 acp is .312"
I'm guessing the bullets would be interchangeable between either cartridge
What makes the 30 Super Carry different is that it's a modern load running at 50K psi
The Federal load is launching a 100 grain bullet at 1250 fps which puts it in 9mm country for terminal energy delivery
and penetration.

An additional advantage is the smaller cartridge's diameter allows for 2 more rounds over 9mm in a similar sized magazine.

A supressed .22LR round shooting subsonic ammo reports less dB than a large caliber BB/Pellet gun.

No Ear Pro required. :D

guess 30 Super Carry sounds more impressive than 32 mag acp  :headscratch:

I find it interesting how different mfg's, especially firearms, are always trying to reinvent the wheel. The amount of new calibers coming out every year is overwhelming. I think alot of is is driven by a fad, whatever is fashionable this year won't be available next.
I can always find 9mm or .45 ammo...sometimes its expensive, but you can always find it.
Imagine going to Sportsman's or similar and trying to find 30 Super Carry?

Very good point.
