We had a couple of jobs lined up a few years back. We almost bought two Makino Horizontals.

We didnt' get the job and I still cry myself to sleep at night.

As far as I'm concerned, in my opinion "hardmilling" is a buzzword people use to justify a type of material removal they prefer. I'm sure people of note will disagree with that statement and they are obviously welcome to. It's just my opinion.

The fact of the matter is materials in excess of say Rockwell 45 on the C scale can machined successfully on a large variety of equipment. The V.Plus-800 included. Learn the strengths of the equipment you like, and how to get the most out it. Period. I've lost track of the number of times I've kicked a competitor's ass when up against "hardmilling machines". Previously the customers didn't consider Matsuura because it was a "hardmilling" part. They listened to the saleman. They listened to the hype/  FFS... it's metal. It's not fucking rocket science. That doesn't mean it's easy, it just means you don't need some magic machine with a lot of buzzwords attached to it to cut with it. You DO need a quality machine. You do need a sound machining strategy. You need quality workholding and tooling, and you need the right options. You DON'T need buzzwords.

Personally I have not been a Mazak fan for a VERY long time. Like early 90's long time. If it were my dime I'd consider Makino, Yasda, Kitamura, Matsuura, and Mitsui Seiki. Possibly a few others. And I'd go with whomever had the strongest support network for Service AND Applications.

I've done hardmilling on the Haas.  Depending on your definition I do it pretty often, one of my most cut materials is 17-4 H900.  I've also cut full hard S7.

The cutting is easy, its the thermo drift that's the problem. Lately we  have been shooting for the .0001  .0002 It dose not sound to bad, but then you start trying to run 50 parts threw with 4 tight features, it starts to be a lot of chasing.

I'm guessing when people hear the term "hardmilling" they envision something like Titans Kennametal HARVI Ultra 8X videos.    Or at least that type of machining.
