I'm going to buy a scale today, I've been trying to slim down a lot, I got heavier than I wanted too, at one point.

When I started the job before this one, I had to do a physical and I was like 230 lbs, which is the most i'd ever been by a lot, I weighed 170 at some point, but I didn't have any muscles either at that point.

I never owned a scale before, never needed to like manage what i eat so much as now..

Man, I feel your pain...

I had lost 80lbs last year....then between November & January, with my wife in & out of the hospital, getting rushed there twice, the stress killed me and I feel off...

I'm back to the point I need to take of 40lbs again and I am having a tough time getting and keeping going...

Good luck, I truly understand what that battle is all about

I gained about 20lbs through the covid shut down. I haven't lost it yet. I'm hoping that summer will finally show up in the NorthWest soon so I can start walking again. Before the lock down I would walk 4 miles every day after work.

I can't run because I have bad knees. I probably wouldn't anyway because unless something is chasing me, I hate running.

I've continued to work out but some kind of cardio is definitely a must.

I never use a scale to determine whether or not I need to lose weight. I go by how comfortable I feel.  I can tell when I'm out of shape.  :D

Managing a diet is difficult. It takes some time to change eating habits. I like to have a cocktail or four on weekends which doesn't exactly help in my case.

Good luck Peter!  I'm sure that yodoug could give you some eating advise!?! :D
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I feel the struggle on this one.... it's tough to lose it and easy to gain it. I have put on about 80 lbs in the last 11 years. Easy to do when you move off the floor and behind a desk. I was telling my co-worker the only time I can figure into my day to exercise is if I get up at 5 am and get on the treadmill before work. Life with a wife and two kiddos (8 and 1) is pretty busy. Of course being more mindful of what I eat would certainly help.

I don't want to drink soy milk and eat vegetables.

Usually I eat grill cheese or like an apple, maybe sushi, I just try to keep it light and have a variety of things and go outside a lot

it definetly starts with what you eat, I was eating like hummus sometimes, or avocato, now i dont have those, also i switched 1 pct milk

In early 2019 I was approaching 220lbs. The heaviest I have ever been. The doctor warned me he was going to put me on meds if I didn't make a change my self. I decided it was enough. It took about 6 months to get down to <180. At my lowest I was almost down to 160 but since I have added a bit more strength training into my routine. Now I run between 170-180. When I stick to an all plant based whole foods diet weight management is easy. The pounds just fall off. When I eat vegan junk food or the occasional animal products foods, My weight creeps up towards that 180 mark. For BJJ comp I like to fall at the high end of the 163-177 weight class. Last comp I went to in march I came in at 178.2. I had to compete with up to 197lbs. It sucked. I spent the last couple months slimming down, watching calories and lots of cardio. Now I am back into a heavy strength training cycle. Ultimately my goal is weigh in at 175 with as much muscle as I can. Gets kind of tricky with diet when you are focusing on body recomp versus just bulk or cut. I now am in a cycle of 2 or 3 days a week of strength training and slight calorie surplus those days with a lot of protein. Then another 2 or 3 days of HIIT/crossfit style workouts with a slight calorie deficit.

Long story short, the biggest change for me was when I started to look at food as fuel and not pleasure. Regardless of how much I am working out, you can't outwork a bad diet. I am pretty strict on using MyFitnessPal to log my food and track my macros. That helps a lot.

When our shop moved to a new building I had them put my office on the 2nd floor just so I could get some exercise walking up and down the stairs all day. Now that I'm getting older I regret that a little, but it definitely helps.  I get about 20 floors a day.

Sitting behind a desk all day every day is definitely not good for you.

I spend my time split, probably 70-30 between office and shop. If we didn't have the gym here that I use on my lunch break I would definitely have to do something outside of work to get my exercise.

One thing a few of us do here sometimes is a David Goggins challenge. He calls it the doorway challenge. Basically every time you go through a door you do 5 burpees or 10 pushups. By the end of the day you end up doing a few hundred.  For me to go out to the shop is 4 doorways round trip. It adds up quickly.

I am also big on bodyweight calisthenics. I have an app on my phone that has about 6 different, 10-15 minute routines. Each one focuses on different parts of the body, core, back, legs, shoulders, etc. I try do one routine first thing in the morning when I roll out of bed. I don't do it everyday, but probably 3 or 4 days a week. It really seems to help get a jump start on getting the metabolism going.

I just bought a fixer-upper so I'm about to go on the renovation diet. Works every time.

Interesting discussion.

A few years ago my wife and I decided we both wanted to lose some weight.
They call it the 'keto diet', but honestly it's simply about reducing your intake of carbs and sugar.
When you do that, your body kicks into a state of 'ketosis' (hence the term 'keto') where it begins to burn fat for fuel instead of carbs and sugar.  Losing weight happens naturally when your body burns fat instead of sugar, so it's win / win.

I agree 100% with Doug's statement above about viewing the food I eat as fuel for my body.
Again, for me it was more of a lifestyle change than a diet.
I lost around 30 pounds initially and have kept it off permanently.

We still have 'cheat days' where we enjoy a pizza, or some sushi, or pasta, but we have both generally kept our weight under control for the most part.  The cheat days are also important because keeping your body in that keto state for prolonged periods can actually become harmful, so again, we view our cheat days as win / win!

For most people the magic number seems to be around 40 carbs or less per day to achieve the keto state.
We don't religiously count ours as some people do, but I do tend to stay in the ballpark most days.
