I have always been amazed at the things bosses/owners do. The biggest one I have always seen is stock size. For some reason they think that an extra 1/8-1/4 on thickness is too expensive. The hours we waste trying to make parts with to size stock is mind boggling. Try to tell them. Oversized stock. Face, mill etc...etc Flip, face, mill, etc..etc... So much faster. Even just at $100/hour shop rate you save a ton of money on handling and cycle time. Always having to try and blend a half and half cut on depth is a pain and time consuming. But you can't fight city hall.

Quote from: crazy^millman on June 21, 2022, 08:15 AMFunny one of those cost saving process many of our customers will never understand how important it is and how much it saves them. Everyone is screaming go green, but a measure like this is just that going green.

Working on a process improvement that was very hard to get a PO for. They didn't think 100 hours of my time was worth spending the money on. Old method was 1 shift running 10 hours a day on the machine. Rough the parts to send out to heat treat was 5 shifts running one part at a time. Got Engineering involved and they agree we could machine the part in a Heat Treated Condition at H900. I loaded up 3 parts at a time and have taken 72 hours of roughing time and reduced it down to 6 hours. They were not using Parent Child tools now we are. We will gain 14 hours a day of unattended run time a day and 48 hours of lost time on the weekend. Eliminated an 8 hours EDM time to cut off the excess material the old way they were doing it. Shop rate is $250 an hour. Doing the math in one year they have gained 5900 hours of run time and 100 hours of my time was hard to justify. Imagine trying to sell this?

CRIKEY! I wish our shop could get $250 an hour.

Fucking Real !!!

I can hack off a quarter inch per pass and be at size in two minutes with a beautiful finish.

Or I can try and skim a chattering tool .

I love guys that use a .032R. to cut .005 off a part.

Give me a cut and Bury that Radius.!!!! Amen!!

The guy who orders material for our shop (owner's son) was supposed to order 2-1/2 square stock for a job but ordered Ø2-1/2. After heat treat, destructive testing blank and certs I got the material on my bench to program the milling operations. That genius move cost the job about a year delay. :flame:

A few years ago same guy discovered a great way to save on shipping. He had a lot of parts (about 150 Ø4" turned blanks) put on the metal recycler's truck to drop off at the heat treater. Last time we saw those parts.

Been there fought that. Doors are now permanently closed. Was building half million dollar die-cast molds and I've had managers stop us from buying cheap things like pipe nipples for the oil and water lines. Made us scrounge for or make them, spent hours making or looking for $20 worth of items.

Just found out my machine will be going down for 4 months next year for a retro fit that it has needed for several years.

Clearly you've not seen some of the equipment out here on the left coast.

You should take the 4 months and get retrofitted yourself.😛
