Yep...and THANK GOD our founders had the good sense to make the process of repealing amendments a difficult one, simply to safeguard against abuse by one party or another.

2/3 of Congress, and 3/4 of States have to agree to repeal an amendment, which seems a nearly impossible feat in todays polarized political landscape.

I believe that is why the liberals have never even seriously considered repealing the 2A, because they realize they could never achieve those kinds of numbers.

They can barely pass things by simple majority anymore, so to get 2/3 of Congress and 3/4 of States to agree on ANYTHING seems far out of reach.

Hmmm. Interesting so you're saying they can put a check on executive action like they did everything Trump did but they can't be a check on obviously unconstitutional laws from the legislature?
There's got to be reason this stuff takes decades if not centuries, like the Sullivan act in NY.

Quote from: gcode on July 14, 2022, 06:39 AMThey are going nuts here in Cali

They just passed a law allowing laws suits against gun manufactures
That has been stuck down once already by the SC... but they are taking another run at it.

They are also working on a law requiring and liability insurance policy for every gun you own.
I don't know if that one is law yet.
That will be interesting because I doubt any insurance company will sell a policy like that
for any affordable price.

The lunatics have a supermajority here... and they can pass any law they want.
and they really like passing laws

As you know, I like California. Well, more accurately, have always liked California. But what you and many others describe of late, man, it sure is putting me off the State.

I get the impression when we visit next, everyone will be driving around in Nissan Leafs, eating vegan and be non gender specific :)

Quote from: JParis on July 14, 2022, 06:43 AMIt looks like NY & CA are just looking for another battle in court....much of what they're trying to do, based on the last decision will be shot down...

When they are finally out of options, THAT is when the Repeal the 2nd push will really come on
Then Democrats will get their 1st lesson in Constitution 101;

Quote... The House of Representatives and Senate both vote on the proposed amendment; the Constitution requires that for the proposed amendment to pass, each house of Congress must pass it with a two-thirds majority. If that happens, the amendment is then sent to state legislatures for their approval. Here again, another, even larger supermajority is required: Three-fourths of all state legislatures must vote to approve the proposed amendment before it is considered ratified and added to the Constitution. This means that only 13 states can block a proposed amendment from being ratified.
Wait unti they find that out.

Quotethe Constitution allows for two-thirds of the states, through their legislatures, to call for a national convention to amend the Constitution.
 That'll happen.

Or the 21st or 27th Amendments.

Good luck with that.

They can try. Thing is you actually have to have a well reasoned idea to get it into the Constitution. For good reason. Leftists just don't have any of those well reasoned ideas laying around anywhere. They have Weekend At Bernie Sanders and they have Economics Degreed AOC. Oh... and they have Nancy Too Drunk to F*** Pelosi. There's your party leftists. Good luck coming up with a good idea form that seed.

Hi TSmcam:

I have lived in CA (greater SF Bay Area) since the early '80's, and while I can't deny *some* of what folks have posted here, I see a much more "normal" place than is depicted here. It's also important to remember that this state is so large, both geographically and economically, that even some of the more far-fetched statements seen here have at least some (perhaps small) basis in fact!

Looking for liberals? Check!
Looking for Gays/Queers? We got those too!
Looking for folks who might be called "environmentalists"? In stock!
Looking for all sorts of transplants from every other part of the country, and the entire *globe* for that matter? You betcha!
Looking for a (still) healthy business climate, with a nearly unparalleled ecosystem of venture capital and universities that feed grads into the next big thing? Yes, still in stock....
How 'bout middle-of-the-road guys with little businesses like yours truly? Way more than you'd ever suspect from sucking down the BS on the "news."
How 'bout some folks that probably look just like whatever you identify as? In stock now, but they're ubiquitous enough and don't fit the wacky narrative that most of the media wants to portray....so people don't think they're "here."

30 years ago, I had a European girlfriend who spent a year here, and it was interesting to hear a foreigner's perspective on CA, even then. After a trip to LA she expressed amazement that *most* of Hollywood didn't look like she expected it-imagine that! Every place has its mythology or oversimplified representation, and we all have our biases.

If you're curious, I'd encourage you to come check it out-and decide for yourself!

This place is certainly not without its flaws (urban areas in this country, and especially CA, are quite expensive), but you could do worse than living here in CA. As a (former) Midwesterner there are certainly things I miss here, but to blame much of one's unhappiness on the geography (or the gays or the liberals or the politicians or whatever) is really an evasion-we all need look no further than our bathroom mirror to see the source of our (un)happiness. It's all in your mind, which is not to imply that it's imaginary!

For any of us that are both sufficiently unhappy with our "plight" here in CA, and also property owners, remember this: you can likely sell and skedaddle to just about anywhere else to chase your dreams. And perhaps also earn the ire of your new neighbors when they learn where you came from! LOL.

You know, I always dug California. I grew up in my early teens racing BMX, and before that, a bit of skateboarding. The pictures from the magazines, reading about cool looking places with palm trees, beaches, Vans shoes etc etc, was the stuff of legends to us.

I have to admit, the first time I arrived there (to attend a VUE, and do some CGTech training), I wasn't disappointed. When I took my family there in 2018, they weren't disappointed either. Hollywood was as we imagined. Not my scene. So was Disneyland (I enjoyed that, expensive as it was). We liked San Diego, and we liked San Clemente. Newport Beach/Balboa was great.

We do need to get back. There is a probably an 85% chance we will be back there next year. Probably do a bit more of a trek further (Malibu, Northern California, and even maybe up into Oregon). There is a lot of the states I still want to see.

We definitely have to see and experience more!

One of my kids is moving out of state next month (promotion). If one more of the kids to moves out of state, there is a more likely than not chance of my wife and I will be leaving my family's home for 6 over generations. The problems I have with this shithole aren't in the mirror they are in that cesspool called Excremento. I love my kids and grandkids more than I loathe this place.

The state has become hostile to my way of life. Every single legislative session something I own becomes illegal to posses, or illegal in it's current configuration. A place I use to hike, ride my bike, enjoy the outdoors gets closed off because of some flower loving fruit fly was found there or something equally as trivial. Ex Post fucking Facto used to mean something. Increasingly my daily life is becoming managed by an all too powerful singular political party that enforces it's will upon people with many of the very things it wishes to outlaw. They are talking about bringing back mask mandates here again because... and get this... 489 people died in the US last week... IN A COUNTRY OF 350,000,000. While no doubt it was tragic for the families involved, I have some still unanswered questions; have these people died FROM the 'Rona or WITH the 'Rona? As if We The People would EVER get an honest answer from the drug addicts running this state/nation. Make no mistake, they are on something FAR more powerful than heroin or opoids; power. They have it, and they will ruin people and businesses to maintain and increase it.

Real estate... once they hear from where you're from, the price just went up. Double digit percentages.

Any time you get in to political discussions there is bound to be some (a lot of) hyperbole involved.  :D

Hi James:

Any idea where you folks would like to go next? Do you think you could pull off some sort of "try before you buy" scenario in case it doesn't meet your expectations? (I only ask as I have a family member who moved across country to be closer to family, didn't like it, and came back after just a couple of years. I'm not privy to all of the details, but I suspect this was an expensive proposition. I always wondered why they couldn't do this in some sort of low risk, incremental fashion, but again....not my call.).

Texas is a BIG state. Houston would NOT be an area we would choose. Most likely somewhere near McKinney IF we were to consider it.

It's going to depend on where our kids go. The one that is moving for work is moving to Utah. I already spend quite a bit of time there... I've spent about 3 months there this year. A few weeks were in the dead of winter and inthe middle of some pretty serious snow storms and I was fine with it. My 2 favorite ski areas are there as well; Alta and Snowbird.
