Spirit Aerosystems and Textron Aviation (Beech and Cessna) need workers. They've both had job fairs lately.

I don't know if it's so "wage wars" as it is companies adjusting to this new reality.

This company realized as they were looking for machinists that their payscale didn't  align to where the current market is at, they urned around and re-did their payscales and also bumped up those that were now below the low end of the new scale. Several people that I am aware of, between their yearly increase and then just a short time later, they've had their pay go up a good deal.

A story suggesting a wage war "sounds" good but it is the reality of the day.

It's certainly not the 1st time these kinds of things have happened. If you are old enough to have lived through the 80's, when minimum wage was under $4/hr and places like McD's were offering $8.50/hr at that time this isn't new.

Next year when the economy goes into full recession and unemployment creeps up, all of these new hires at higher wages will be the first to get laid off.

It's not just machinists involved. It's everyone from deburr to rivet pounders to machinists on 9 axis mills. Both companies are trying to hire from a limited labor pool. There are referral bonuses offered for experienced sheet metal mechanics even.
So war may have been a bit strong but, at least in our little aviation sphere, there is fairly strong competition.

The raises are for existing employees as well as new hires.

But, layoffs have always been part of aviation life here. When I was growing up my dad worked at Boeing, which is now Spirit. Layoffs were just a part of life. However, general aviation (Beech, Cessna and Learjet) and commercial aviation, Boeing, seemed to operate on opposite cycles. My dad would get laid off from Boeing and get hired at Cessna. Cessna would slow down about the time Boeing picked up and he would get called back to Boeing. That continued with me until I got into programming.

We've been on a hiring binge lately
Normally we have a difficult time competing for good machinists as we can't (won't??)
match the wages of the big shops in the LA Metro Area.
Super high gas prices have changed that.
When you add $200 to $300 a week in gas to commute to the city our wages are now very competitive
I'll bet we've stolen a half dozen pretty good hands from Spacex alone in the last couple of months

I think we are reaching the point where you could negotiate that into an employment agreement.
