Anybody have any experience with the portable jump starters? I'm thinking of getting a couple to keep in our cars in case of an emergency, both for the wife and I and anybody else who needs a jump starter.

This is the one I''m looking at on Amazon. Lots of good reviews but the bad ones are pretty bad.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

I just installed that brand of battery maintainer in my boat last month, no problems so far.
I've never had much luck outta portable jump starters, but they were cheap ones.  Let us know how the one you buy works out.

I've had that same unit for over 5 years. Has jumped my trucks, boats, atv, mower, other peoples vehicles, etc. Holds a great charge and can jump multiple times (like 20+) before needing recharge. Would have preferred they kept the original clamps than the ones they have now but that's probably minor.

I only used one once, and it worked great.

My car battery recently died in my driveway and I called meh bro-in-law to give me a jumpstart.
When he got to the house I had my jumper cables all ready to go, but instead he pulled out one of those little portable jumpstarters and she fired right up.   8)

I'm not sure what brand he had because it was dark when he came over and I didn't see it up close, but he said his kids gave it to him last Christmas, and he has used it several times since.

They are definitely a good investment, especially if you live in a colder climate.

The same way you jump start a ICE car that's out of gas, you don't start it, you push it...   Joking aside, if someone buys an EV and lets the battery drain dry, they shouldn't own an EV, or they should be happy to have to pay the tow to a charge station.

I use these at my part time job and they do seem to work well. keep it charged up and you should be fine.

Don't bother getting a cheap one. I bought one a couple of years ago that tops out at starting a lawn tractor. My Audi (Big, BIG battery) just sneers at it.

It's not too hard, first you tie a key to a kite. Then hold the kite with one hand and the door handle with the other.

At some point EV batteries will be like the batteries on power tools
When it's dead you pop it out and replace it with a freshly charged one.
You won't actually own the batteries, you will just exchange a depleted one for a fresh one at the charging station
and it will take less than 5 minutes to do it.
They are already doing something similar with short haul (200 to 300 miles) EV passenger aircraft in Sweden

How large or small will the batteries be for a decent sized car?

Tesla tried it, they quickly went away from it. Not saying it isn't feasible, however having that many extra batteries, chargers, and equipment to handle the demand in one location was huge, then multiply that by locations needed proved enormous.
