I read that the skin gets so hot a full speed that it expands enough to start wrinkling.
They built the plane so loose the wing fuel tanks leak like sieves when it's on the ground
They put just enough fuel in it to get it off the ground then fill it up in flight with a tanker and go supersonic
Once the skin warms up, it quits leaking.
The most amazing thing about the SR-71 is that it went from a back of a napkin sketch to first flight in 18 months.

I live right down the road from a military base. They have a handful of F-15's that fly daily. It can be annoying at times because they're so loud but I don't mind the noise because they're just so cool.

There's rumors that the base is going to get a couple F-35's in the next couple years. I've never seen or heard one fly but my understanding is the 35's are way louder than the 15's.

On July 4th 2 years ago, I was waiting for our local fireworks display to start when I looked up and saw 2 B2's. It was a cool moment.

I routinely drive by Miramar and will see practice runs and landings - usually while driving it's hard to see what exact model.   Occasionally we get a VERY loud military jet that I have yet to see go over the neighbourhood
Lots of ospreys going 2km/h as well

really want to go to the airshow this year

I used to go fishing by the air base at USMC base Quantico. I always ducked and cringed when those Ospreys flew overhead.

They don't have the best reputation for staying airborne.

I can do without war, but warplanes will never cease to be fascinating and amazing.  As a kid I was obsessed with the F-14

You would love the Boeing Museum or Flight in Seattle. We were in Seattle in 2018 for the Special Olympics national games. Our last day there I finally got to drag the wife to something I wanted to do. It was very cool. They do now have a B52 exhibit that was not open when we went.
