However I did read recently that the Marine Corps is considering dropping the identifiers 'sir' and 'maam' for basic training recruits addressing drill instructors, in order to promote gender diversity.

Allowing some wacky liberal university 'study' to undo almost 250 years of Marine Corps tradition seems like a foolish idea to me, but that's where we are heading...
