I am going to work from home again today, but my son still has to go in. I just got in from clearing the two foot high drift across the driveway that forms every four hours or so. Our house is in a cul-de-sac on the edge of the neighborhood, surrounded by farm fields on three sides. The wind just rips down our street and forms massive drifts. Currently -12 with a real feel of -33, 25mph winds.

They are starting rolling blackouts in parts of Tennessee. Currently it's 9 degrees, definitely the coldest weather I have seen in the 30 years I have lived here. Really putting a strain on the power grid.

This a.m. we were at -3 degrees with a -32 windchill.

got to work and all the red lights were flashin on the Lathes. ("low air pressure")

Boss left yesterday for Vaca and won't be back till the 3rd.

Our air compressor is in the unheated portion of our shop.

Got it fired up and it ran for 9 minutes and shutdown.

fired it back up. 8 minutes later shutdown.

It was froze up solid. Called the  owner and he called Evapar.

Evapar says ......Uhh No..The 23rd and -3 degrees.

Owner looks at me and says "Would you guys be mad if I sent you home"?

I told him his Truck was blocking my car and he needed to move it. ;D

It was a rough day from 7 till 9:30....But I made it. ::)

Pro-Tip...

CNC Machines don't like those really cold temps.

One of our AE's was in a non climate controlled shop some weeks ago training on a new machine and the temp in the shop got down into the single digits all night. During the day it was stilll below freezing in the shop. Our AE goes to start the machine to do the spindle warmup at 8am... It took 6 hours to get the Hydraulics and Spindle up to a safe operating temperature. The customer got indignant about it.  :o

Well we made it. Roads were decent just white knuckle  whiteout conditions about 50% of the time. Got off the highway,  waiting at the stoplight to turn and the large Penske box truck stopped behind us(had been waiting and stopped behind us for probably 20 seconds already) decided to roll/slide into us. Guess I get a free new bumper and two new child seats.... :horse:

This is the third time I've been rear-ended by a box truck while stopped.....  :hairpull:

When I lived in Colorado, a lot of people used dipstick heaters on their cars
The replaced the factory dipstick and had to be plugged into a 110V power source.
They kept the engine oil from freezing, made it easier to start the car and
prevented engine damage from starting the engine with oil too cold and viscous to be
pumped to all the places that need engine oil.

Maybe you could rig up something similar on this machine??
At any rate, I would formally highlight the need to warm the hydraulics and spindle up in the final buyoff
documents.
You know as well as I do, this crew is not going to spend 6 hours daily warming up the machine
and you are certain to get a call for a warranty repair because they didn't properly warm up the machine every morning
There is no way the machine is going to hold specs if it's fluctuating from single digits to room temperature on a regular basis

Come one man quit being a drag.     They live in that place like so many do where the laws of Physics and reality don't apply to them.      They are above and better than anyone else that walks on this earth. Don't dare to contradict them and start talking about thermal growth and shrinkage because of temperature fluctuation. They are as real as the earth being round. Thermal velocity for oils you said what?

Need to quit using that fancy edumcated words and just run it till it dies.

Del.

Had to cancel family Christmas for tonight. Just too dangerous for driving. Sucks.

There are systems in place within the machine that prevent it from running part programs if certain criteria are not met (spindle temp AND hydraulic fluid temp).

The machine has 32 pallets. If they do things right, the machine will never stop thus preventing long warmup times. :)

How does a place get equipment like this but them can't pay for heat?!?!?!?

Blows my mind!
Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see.

It's typical . we saw material in 30 degree temps and pass them on they hit the lathes and its like loading Icicles.
and then we have a .0004 tolerance Pppfffft.

If they hit a 68 Degree Q.C. shop we are fooked.

In the summer we run at close to 100 degrees... SSDD!!!

Cold AF here. Blowing snow like crazy. Been watching cars get stuck on our road all afternoon and evening. Pulled out the first few, but got tired of suiting up to go out so let the last couple sit,  including a county cop in a 4x4 SUV. Fuck him. He can call the country garage and maybe they can run a Fucking snowplow down the Fucking road for once in the day.
