Quote from: JParis on February 14, 2023, 08:02 AMOver the past couple of years I gave up the notion of buying a small home before I retired...it simply does not make any sort of financial sense....especially not as I consider I am in my last 10 working years.

It just ain't happening....

I got lucky and bought during the dip after the housing bubble burst.  I was able to get a really good price on a Condo and a really low interest rate. If I had waited any longer I wouldn't have been able to afford a home and I would still be renting.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I am at the point now I am just trying to plow everything into my 401k that I can....and of course the bumbling boob screws that up too..

Frustrating...to say the least

Quote from: neurosis on February 14, 2023, 07:58 AMThat would be a tough sell in Boise Idaho? Sure, the median housing price is only $500,000, but the median income is only $35,000.  Idaho is about as red as it gets and they have the same problem.

It takes about 10 minutes of research to find that this is an issue across the US, and sure, it's worse in bigger Cities but this isn't limited to Democrat run States or areas.

there will be a market correction. there has to be. In the numbers you showed from the Seattle area, things are too upside down to stay that way.  One more reason, why people who should have known better, were lying or at least dead wrong about inflaton. Maybe the reason, Janet Yellen said it was transitory is because she knows it's about to crash.

The question the (m)asses never asked was, "transitory to what exactly?"

This is the house I was talking about.  There are several affordable houses in her area.  With an aluminum foil company in town single income homes are do-able there.  Now Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga areas are likely a different story.

I'm surprised to see that house for that price. If you scroll down there are no other houses even close to that price.  Most empty lots are going for the same price.

We bought our first house in OK in 2003. We sold our house in OK in 2010, but the housing market had very little bubble there. We did see a bit of gain though in that time. Then we moved to MN. My sister had a townhouse she wasn't using so she rented it to us for a great price. We stayed there until prices hit the bottom and bought our next house in early 2012. Nearly doubled in value when we sold in 2018. Of course we had to buy in 2018 market, but it worked out and we still have a lot of equity, even if the market corrects.

Here is Idaho since 2007.  Not a lot of blue in there.

If only we could find a billionaire, high profile personality type that is a Washington outsider and could get elected without being beholden to the parties and big corps/special interests. If only...........

I was considering retiring in Idaho until I realized that I couldn't afford to live there any more than here.  :D

My g/f has friends and family that lives in the Post Falls / Coeur d'Alene area. It's a beautiful area but the housing prices are as bad as they are here. I think that they may correct faster hopefully.

He doesn't skate on the current financial situation either...a lot of checks were sent out under his watch as well and they also factor into this mess.

All it takes is one liberal turd in the punchbowl to eff it up.
