Quote from: neurosis on March 06, 2023, 12:25 PMI finally got a hold of a doctor I've been to that is close to my house. They had me take my blood pressure while I was on the phone and it was 185/106

They told me to go straight to the ER. So that's where I've spend the last three hours.

Hopefully it's nothing major....that said, it's better that they played it safe and had you go there...

Sounded like they didn't want to chance me driving 20 miles.

Once I got there they did a bunch of blood work and an EKG.  I basically got the "make an appointment with a primary care physician and a cardiologist".  After about an hour of random interval blood pressure tests it got back down to about 150/90 Still high, but a lot better than it was.

I have a feeling there is going to be some blood pressure medication in my future.

Let me tell you, the fun is just beginning.
From now on, if the doctor tells you he'd like to perform a 'digital exam', it has nothing to do with computers.

(150/90 much better! Still a bit high, but not dangerous. Still, it fluctuates. Get some meds soon. I take 3 myself, atenolol, losarten, and amlodipine)

In doing research on your case I have come to the conclusion that blood pressure medications have a propensity for
Erectile dysfunction. I have studied Your Case file and would be happy to share my results with ST. ;D

I have only Your best interest in mind. and would only guide her into a proper science based analytic response.

feel free to give me her #Number and I will consult with her Immediately. Time is of the essence. ;)

I take those last two plus Toprol.

Hi Neuro:

I hope you're feeling better!

My wife has (occasionally) had high BP (can't remember the numbers, but they were concerned), and it was noted that her frequent use of decongestants for allergies was the primary cause. This stuff is legal speed! Could you have anything like this at play? My wife was unaware of the side effects of this stuff until the doc mentioned it.

Brian

Of course, listening to too much of that weird music I've posted could cause this, too!

No. I don't take any kind of medication at all. I rarely even take an aspirin unless I really need one.

I'm guessing that I'm just going to have to commit to changing my diet. I don't eat too bad compared to some, but I think that old age is catching up with me.   :D

Diet and exercise are good ways to keep your BP in check, with or without meds.

Many people have borderline high BP and are able to avoid the meds just by eating better and exercising more.
It doesn't hurt to try, and even if you do end up having to take the BP meds you will still be healthier overall.

I don't know if you're carrying extra pounds or not but losing those extra pounds will help, possibly to the point you don't need the meds. As Jim says, diet, exercise, and weight are key.

We have a med station where I work so I'm able to have my blood pressure checked a couple times a week easily. A couple years ago I put on about 15 pounds and had to increase my dosage. I changed my diet and lost those pounds and was able to track the drop in my blood pressure along with the weight. I wasn't able to kick the meds completely but I did reduce it. My blood pressure dropped actually too low for a short while.

It sucks getting older but hang in there and do what you gotta do!

I have always had borderline high BP, even as a kid. I saw basically one doctor from birth to 40ish years old. When I'd ask about my BP, he'd always say, that's just how you run kid. I was always around 130/80 but would occasionally hit 140/90.

When he finally croaked and I saw a new doc, he was like, we need to get your BP down. I didn't want to take meds so I did the diet and exercise thing. Cut out most salt, reduced alcohol intake, and for the first time in my life, went to the gym.

5 days a week, one hour a day. Weights, cardio, cardio weights. Did this for 6 months. Went back to doc and my BP hadn't changed a bit.

He gave me 20mg of lisinopril to take daily and I came back after a week. Still no change.

Added 5mg of amlodipine. Came back in a week and I was 120/80.

I have since abandoned the gym and went back to eating and drinking whatever the fuck I want to. I'm still right at 120/80. Should have just taken the pills to start.

There are some good meds out there proven over the years to be effective.
