Quote from: Leehound on March 11, 2023, 03:49 PMHow do you feel about biological males competing in women's sports? Or biological males using the same bathroom or locker room as the young females. People are being forced to accept it and have lost their jobs because they didn't. Or how about the parent who has a child in school and without being told that their young child is getting advice on how to transition from school counselors.

To be quite honest I have different levels of discomfort with all those things. As an older guy I grew up in a world where all the LGBTQ stuff was hidden in the closet, at least in the small Kansas town I grew up in.

I think a big part of what drives this debate is whether you believe LGBTQ people are naturally the way they are or they have made a choice to be the way they are.

I have twin grand kids, 4 years old now, a boy and a girl. They are both what most people would consider "normal." The boy loves his hot wheels, trucks of all kinds from pickups to garbage to semis. Stereotypical boy, he's always has been that way.

The girl likes to play house, loves her dolls, tea parties, dancing, and won't wear anything but dresses. Stereotypical girl, she's always been that way.

It's the way they are and there's really no choice involved. I'm glad that's the way it is, life will be easier for them.

But how about the girls who love trucks and the boys who love playing house and dancing when they're so young? Is it a choice or the way they are?

I believe it's just naturally the way they are. 50 years ago they would be forced to be in a closet but I don't think it should be that way now, 50 years later. It's probably the older people who will have the most trouble adjusting to that.

We've got to get it figured out and treat everybody with respect.

I get the sense that many people consider trans people, LGBTQ people, to be predators. I think there's no rational data to back that up.

One thing I know I don't trust is a bunch of fkn politicians making laws that single out a very small group of people who aren't a danger to anyone. Rather than treating people (LGBTQ, immigrants, everybody) like objects to vilify for political gain just treat them like people. The same as you want yourself and your children to be treated.

I agree with most of that post. Love, compassion and respect for all life, that's what I try hardest to live by. My main beef would not necessarily be with the small group of people, but instead the larger group of people who would call me a bigot because I think that lifestyle is harmful to their own well-being. People who would say that because I don't believe that a person in a man's body is a woman, I am in someway, a corrupted individual.

Throughout all of history there have been varying degrees of effeminate men and "tom-boyish" girls. It crosses a an easily distinguishable line to say that an effeminate boy is a girl or visa versa. My own wife was what most people would call a tom-boy growing up. (pretty much in the way you described above) but no one took that behavior and tried to convince her she was actually a man, which could very likely happen in a school today.

Just because someone is born with some natural tendency, doesn't mean that natural tendency should be celebrated. I, myself, was born with a terrible temper. Of course no parent or school personnel would affirm to anyone that their quick temper is wholesome and to be celebrated. And I'm thankful for my parents that they worked hard to train me up in a way to keep that temper in check. Now someone might say, a temper is different. a temper is not an identity, which is correct. it's not an identity, it's a behavior. But that behavior can lead to someone acting like a jerk. and a Jerk can quickly become an identity. Should being a jerk be celebrated? of course not!

Diversity is beautiful in so many ways, but if diversity requires us all to think the same, it loses it's beauty.

I believe the vast majority of people don't require everybody to think the same. Those who only see black and white will, and usually do.

Love, respect, respect for life and I'll add empathy to that list too, is a great start.

There are a lot of examples of people who disagree with the LGBT stance who have been persecuted and even prosecuted for their beliefs.

There are a lot of examples of people persecuting LGBT people for being who they are also.

Doesn't make either one right.
