I would have more respect for Trump if he had come out and said something like - fuck it - clinton did it. 

That and if he wasn't known for screwing over contractors who've worked for him.  Or blame every failure on someone else.  The things that show that someone actually has integrity.

did I say that? My point was that I would be more likely to be disgusted by someone like Trump, that I did vote for than someone like Clinton, who I did not vote for. Of course principals matter. But my point earlier was that I may sacrifice a candidates morality in exchange for strong leadership attributes. And I think that a lot of democrats did that with Clinton and a lot of Republicans did that with Trump.

Look. Fred Rogers (Mr Rogers) ideas of how to treat people, his views with christian principals, are probably really close to my own, but I would never vote for him if he had run for president, because I don't think he had the leadership ability it would take. (dealing with people like Putin or Xi Jinping) So if a primary came down to Trump and Mr Rogers, even though, ethically, I like Mr Rogers better I would have had to vote for someone I think has the strong leadership ability, even though I am disgusted by his morals. Just using Mr Rogers as an obvious example to make my point. It could have been anybody.
