Is Throwing Loose Change at Cars a 'Thing'?

So I am walking out to my car yesterday after work an notice a large hole in my passenger side headlight. Upon closer inspection, there a fuckin nickel sitting there inside the headlight. As I take a step back and look around, there's a nickel sized ring in the paint of the hood near the headlight...

Is this something crazy kids are doing for fun?

Did I piss someone off?

I've been racking my brain trying to think of when it happened. I'm surprised I didn't notice it when it happened. Had to be like hitting a decent sized rock. And it had to happen at a pretty decent speed for it to penetrate a polycarb headlight lens.

To make this piss me off even more, I just picked up my car from the body shop last week after months of waiting for a cut rate insurance company, parts to come in, and repairs. Whole front end was repainted and the other headlight was replaced. And that headlight was $1600 and took almost a month to get.

WTF is wrong with people?

I hit a deer last fall, and the headlight assemblies for my Toyota Rav4 were $1,400 each.  Headlight assemblies are crazy expensive these days with the Projection lamps.

At lease the nickel is still in the headlight assembly, now it will only cost $1,599.95 to replace.

I highly doubt it happened while driving.  Someone probably didn't like the way you parked or some kids with loose change in their pockets and not being able to buy a snickers with it anymore and threw it at the vehicle. A coin thrown on edge has a lot of power.

Sorry that happened.

Check into replacing just the lens on the light, may be possible as I've done it on another vehicle with the sealed headlights. YouTube may have a few videos on it.

I don't think Shohei fuckin Ohtani can chuck a nickel hard enough to break a modern polycarb headlight lens. And I haven't parked anywhere but work and home.

Any pedestrian walkways over the highways you travel regularly?
The only thing I can think of is kids dropping change from there trying to hit cars going by at highway speeds.

Maybe someone was using a slingshot?

I've seen people shooting loose change with a slingshot when I was younger and those things can do some damage.

I knew a guy who said that, as a teenager, he worked at a members only fishing lake. His overnight job was to look for people sneaking in. He said they would use slingshots to shoot marbles at people they found trespassing.

I'm sure back in the 1930's you could get away with something like that.  ;D

Did you hit the Toll Booth Lady on your way home from The Bar??

I would suggest The "QuikPass" Option.

That way no change is involved.

In happy news, I was talking to Ryan, not Jake, from State Farm last night. Needed info about our home owners insurance and some hail damage. I mentioned the nickels from heaven incident. He says, we'll file it under vandalism. That's a zero deductible claim. Take her back to the body shop and get it fixed.

Just got back from body shop. They can't get it in until 6/19.

Wanna play guess the estimate? Look and the above pics, knowing a new headlight is $1600, and give a guess.

Closest guess wins 50 Microbucks.
