Quote from: YoDoug on May 05, 2023, 12:31 PMI'll have to check that out. We have TMAC From Caron engineering in a few of our machines. They use Beckhoff controls and they have a nice web server interface you can access from any pc on the network. I have been looking into using one of those in lieu of the PLC's I use now.

I think you would LOVE it - essentially take what you're doing now with building interfaces, but the connectivity part of it is taken care of, and it makes hooking up alarms, history, notifications etc. very easy - also designing for flexibility of different screen sizes, mobile phones etc.

First casualty - drive through window workers?

Wendy's testing AI chatbot that takes drive-thru orders

QuoteIt could be an artificial intelligence that takes your order the next time you get a craving for a Baconator and Frosty.

Fast food chain Wendy's is partnering with Google Cloud on an AI chatbot to take orders at a drive-thru, the company announced Tuesday. Wendy's FreshAI will be launched in June as a pilot in a Columbus, Ohio area restaurant. Based on how the AI-ordering system performs, the pilot will be expanded.

The AI could potentially handle a huge portion of service; around 75 to 80% of customers prefer to order through the drive-thru, according to the chain. Wendy's is not the first fast-food chain to turn to automated processes. McDonald's launched an automated restaurant in 2022.

There is a Wendy's about 20 minutes from our house. The one redeeming quality is that for whatever reason (management, culture, etc.) they have the most courteous and friendly workers. Reminds me of how Chic-fil-a used to be in the south. I don't eat there anymore but it would be a shame to see those people lose their jobs.

There is a McDonald's on the southside of Indy, right off 465 on US37, that runs like a Chick Fillet. It's a well oiled machine and has the best quality food I've ever had from McD's, which isn't saying all that much.

The manager is a younger Hispanic lady who I 100% guarantee was in the military or at least had military parents.

When isn't helping a customer she is barking orders at every worker in the place, moving from station to station wherever help is needed.

Let's not confuse "courteous and friendly workers" with a well run establishment.

The waitress at a local restaurant was also a guard at a women's prison.
She would sit on a evavated chair at the top of the restaurant so she had a good view of all the customers.

If a patron needed a coffee-refill, it was not uncommon for her to bark, "The coffee pot is up here and your legs aren't broken". Then, while getting your own coffee, she'd remind you to top-up the coffee at table six.

She had the entire dining room running around making sure everyone had what they needed and no one dared to question her authority.

Audiobooks Are Thriving, but Could AI Take Over?

Here goes another job potentially lost to AI.  I wonder if actors will be able to rent out rights to the sound of their voice.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/features/audiobooks-are-thriving-but-could-ai-take-over/

QuoteAudiobooks are booming. The market is expected to hit $33.5 billion by 2030, up from about $4.2 billion in 2021, according to Acumen Research and Consulting. Whether this is an offshoot of the rise in popularity of podcasts, a matter of listening convenience or a byproduct of the pandemic, it hasn't escaped the attention of tech companies and the inevitable creep of artificial intelligence.

In 2023, the excitement around AI's potential is high, but so is anxiety about it stealing jobs from struggling creatives. ChatGPT can write anything from insurance preauthorization letters to dating app bios, with varying degrees of success. AI platforms like Lensa AI and OpenAI's Dall-E spit out AI-generated art, leaving many who earn a living creating digital art worrying about their future.

ChatGPT maker OpenAI sued for allegedly using "stolen private information"

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chatgpt-open-ai-lawuit-stolen-private-information/

QuoteOpenAI, the artificial intelligence firm behind ChatGPT, went from a non-profit research lab to a company that is unlawfully stealing millions of users' private information to train its tools, according to a new lawsuit that calls on the organization to compensate those users.

OpenAI developed its AI products, including chatbot ChatGPT, image generator Dall-E and others using "stolen private information, including personally identifiable information" from hundreds of millions of internet users, the 157-page lawsuit, filed in the Northern district of California Wednesday, alleges.
