Any audiophiles out there?
I have a modest 5.1 system for movies and listening. I still struggle to hear voices in movies. I know it's mostly because of the jackass movie studios and actors that like to mumble and couldn't have anything to do with my aged hearing.
So is this a speaker question or an AV electronics question?

That's why God created EQ's... to fix Hollywood's trash sound.

And He created brightness and contrast settings so we could actually see WTF they were filming too.

As bad as my hearing is, I can still tell the difference between Polk Audio speaker and a consumer grade speaker.

I've got a 5.1 setup as well. Denon reciever/Amp and Boston Acoustics speakers and a Polk Audio powered sub. Not awesome but it was in the budget. My wife can barely tell the difference between a transistor radio and a Hi-Fi. Seriously. It's annoying AF.

If I had it my way, I'd go with either a McIntosh, Cambridge Audio or NAD Amp and Klipsch Speakers. But no way in hell would my wife let me sink $10k into a home audio setup.

In the process of trying to convince her we NEED a 7.1 system. I may be able to win that battle... 🤞

Polk audio R700 speakers get some love on YouTube and not stupid expensive.
Drooling over the Klipsch heritage line, ATM. But pretty spendy.
My lower end Denon AV reciever is a little baffling to jump through movie and music presets. I'd like a set it and forget it system.

McIntosh paired with Magnepan LRS+ ribbon speakers get some rave reviews. Interesting juxtaposition with high end amp and cheap speakers.

Speakers are crazy beasts and vary as widely as the types of music that get piped through them.

Some people are all about that flat sound... they want their spectrum analyzer display to be as flat as possible. That's not me. I prefer more bass and high frequencies. The older I get the more high freq. I need due to hearing loss which is to be expected in our line of work even for the most diligent protectors of hearing. These days, If I'm being honest, I'd have a hard time discerning between a Polk and a Klipsch speaker system. BITD when I was heavy into Car Audio Systems and doing installs for competition systems I could though. Today... not so much.

Amps though... THD is what separates the good stuff from the trash. When listening at low levels the good stuff is really, Really, REALLY quiet.

I want so much power in my system it dims the street lights when the bass hits.

Audiophile,  yup...

Have had the stereo, Dolby, Infinity 5.1 system...250 watt JBL sub-woofer still behind my TV Credenza but unused...

As we downsized to a Condo, the power, while I love it, isn't necessary.

I've got a Dolby 5.1 Soundbar that's been enough for me...

Sansui 9090db 250 watts per channel.

Altec Malibu dual speakers full cabinet.

At a quarter turn I can be heard clearly a block away. ;D

The key question is Clarity.

I can hear every Note. :)

Pink Floyd Echoes sounds amazing on an adequately powered system. Though I loathe Roger Waters, his musicianship up to The Wall was beyond reproach, after The Wall... just not up to snuff IMHO. But Echoes... it just hits. HARD.

I love bass... not like rap bass... that shit ain't real.

Yeah they like to mumble and whisper a lot fucking drives me insane. Try turning up the center speaker a tad for the dialogue.(or use subtitles lol)
I used to have a badass 7.1 system about 15 years ago.
Onkyo 130w receiver with Polk Audio center, rear and rear center speakers, Cerwin Vega 15" front tower speakers and a Velodyne 1200w powered sub. That system was nuts. And expensive.
The one thing you can't skimp on is the sub. Those shitty 150w subs don't compare at all. You get way more quality sound the more wattage you have.
