OSHA would have a field day with these guys
Pour steel and running VTLs wearing flip flops
And the guy freehanding gears on an antique shaper is amazing

It would be interesting to know what those gears are used for.
Maybe they are roughed blanks that will be finished machined elsewhere.
I've run shapers, and there is no way those teeth aren't tapered front to back.
I'm also wondering how long that shaping operation takes and how much that plant gets for one of those.

So they don't just dump them into the melting furnace and grab a new guy from the street?

It would be fascinating to run one of those gears through a CMM to see how good ( or bad ) the are

That guy is shaping the gears free hand by tweaking the X and Z on the shaper with each stroke.
I couldn't see any sign of a scribed shape to aid him, but it may have been on the back side of the gear.
I'll bet that takes weeks to do and his back is no doubt killing him the whole time

That was my first thought.

You can see the gib sticking out on the one side. They probably just got done welding 1/4" stripes on it.
