Goodness Gracious! Baseball team pressured to change their team mascot name (Macon Bacon) because it glorifies meat.

On a side note, I still wonder how it is that when you name your team the Indians, you denigrate them, but when you name your team anything else it glorifies them.

on another side note, does the Dodgers name denigrate or glorify Bill Clinton and other draft dodgers?

A physicians group in Georgia put up a billboard targeting the fans of the Macon Bacon, a collegiate summer league baseball team, and wrote a letter to the team's president.

The Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine's billboard is located on Interstate 16 and asks fans to "keep bacon off your plate." The group also sent a letter to team president Brandon Raphael accusing the organization of glorifying the meat.

"Macon Bacon's glorification of bacon, a processed meat that raises the risk of colorectal cancer and other diseases, sends the wrong message to fans," the letter from nutrition education program manager Anna Herby, DHSc, RD, CDCES, to Raphael read. "I urge you to update the team's name to Macon Facon Bacon and promote plant-based bacon alternatives, such as Facon Bacon or Mushroom Bacon, that will help your fans stay healthy. As for Kevin, Macon Bacon's mascot, he can reveal that he is actually plant-based bacon."

As a person who eats bacon everyday I find great offense to this lady saying that plant based bacon in "Better" for you then actual bacon.

In the USA, parents can select an "X" gender marker on birth certificates and passports, so for some, the question of "assigned at birth" could be considered hate speech.

Seriously, I don't care one bit if the Macon team wants to call themselves the Bacon. IMO free speech trumps all feelings. If people don't like the name of a team or company or spokesperson of a product, don't buy it.

As for facon, we have only found one brand that we like and it is a decent alternative. It is not the same as bacon, it does have a different texture and slightly different flavor. However it makes a great BLT and it is cholesterol free, cruelty free, and way less saturated fat.

At least most of the vegan ribbing on here is light hearted.  I've seen some pretty nasty back and forths when it comes to diets.

Personally, I like the discussions when they're creative.  I'm always looking for a way to eat healthier. Meat, or no meat.

Sometimes, I do feel bad about all of the Moles, voles, rabbits, possums, and deer, tomato bugs, squash bugs, japanese beetles, etc I have to kill to keep my corn, tomatoes, carrots, radishes and zucchini alive. But eventually, I get over it.

They should change their mascot name to a healthy plant food like a Mushroom. A picture of a nice healthy mushroom with a stem almost as thick as the mushroom head on a jersey would show how much you care about healthy eating. You could even put the words "Eat Me" right underneath the mushroom.
