It's a shame that he survived.
I have a feeling that someone got paid to do it.

Quote from: neurosis on July 11, 2023, 06:23 AMThere is one other category. Some CO's are just unnecessarily a-holes to inmates. That may be part of the us vs them mentality, maybe just a power-complex, but rookie CO's are usually the worst.

True.
You will have that in any profession, but some in law enforcement and corrections do seem to enjoy the power trip.

But I will let you in on a little secret...
When shit goes sideways in a prison, the CO's who are considered cruel assholes are going to be the first ones bleeding.

On the other hand, there are at least a few CO's in every prison who have reputations for treating inmates fairly, and those guys will be less likely to be harmed during any kind of uprising.

I personally know at least 2 guys who aren't going to do well if our local prison inmates ever decide to riot.
Both of them were bullied in high school, so when they got their CO jobs they decided to pay the world back for all of the hurt they went through as kids.

I also know a few of the other type of CO's who are far more respected among the inmates.
My buddy I mentioned earlier gives the same speech to every new inmate on his cell block the first day:
"I am here to do my job, you are here to do your time.  You don't go out of your way to fuk with me, and I won't go out of my way to fuk with you.  That's how I roll, so it's your choice."

In his 20 plus year career, he has had about 90% success with that approach.
The other 10% are just violent asshole inmates who are going to act out no matter how they are treated.

My oldest son is a Sheriff at Men's Central in Los Angeles. He's been there a while and trains the FNG's. He warns them about unjustly mistreating inmates. Not only is it a "policy violation", but, just like you said, if you're an asshole to them just because, you WILL be the first one to bleed.
