Quote from: Incogneeto on July 13, 2023, 01:23 PMWell I pulled my retirement to help my Kids,

I don't need much.

I can easily pass on $2000 a month at this point.

Del?? How long did it take when you filed?? I have heard 6 months and then another 5 to get the first check,

I'm ready.

I have options .

Seems like it was a couple months on SS check

"Johnny's life passed him by like a warm summer day".

Heck, if you're going that route don't forget to have a fine selection of mushrooms and cactus flowers.

Quote from: CNCAppsJames on July 13, 2023, 01:06 PMI've come terms with the fact that retirement is never going to be an option for me. I do have money put away in various things and contribute to a 401k but, in all reality it'll never be enough to live on so I shall work until I am dead... and that's ok.

I wanna see an 80 something yr old wearing a beannie propeller hat =)
I might have to stick around that long just for that!

Quote from: JParis on July 13, 2023, 07:50 AMI say having a large family delayed any kind of "retirement" savings for too many years...I am playing catch up but the reality for me is I'll never arrive at any where near the "suggested" numbers...

Between my contribution and the companies match, I am putting in 13% of my yearly salary....I have a very low 4 figure IRA that I keep trying to add to....and life just continues to find a way to rip away most of any discretionary income that I have...

Man, that sounds familiar. Just about the time I think I'm making some progress some emergency pops up costing several thousand dollars. Sometimes several, several thousand dollars, lol. But my family is in a much better place now than if I hadn't done these things. Being an ancient relic, I think it is a man's responsibility to ensure his family is taken care of. I also feel incredibly lucky to have had the resources to help.

People at work used to ask about my retirement plans. My response was "leaving here feet first on a gurney". Retirement always seemed so out of reach.

Now, I don't really want to retire. I get to work on interesting projects and technology. My coworkers are, for the most part, good people. I am at the point in my career where my opinion has value. The only down side is living alone. So, I'm going to keep going for a while unless my ability to contribute diminishes too much.

Quote from: Del. on July 13, 2023, 01:22 PMI would think it would be difficult for any middle class person to retire comfortably in California as high as the COL is.
I don't plan on living in this shithole of a state one second longer than absolutely positively necessary. About 431hours left but who's counting?

We bought my parents house 3 years ago after my mom passed. Wanted to keep dad there as long as he is able but it was too big for him alone so now he lives with us. They had set aside the house as an inheritance for the kids so we took mine in the equity. Got it for a much lower price than market. Our house sold for way more than we ever expected so all that has gone into the house. Since moving in we have put a gas fireplace in the main living room. New roof and boiler. Completely remodeled the kitchen. Downstairs bathroom gutted and completely redone. The downstairs room off the family room remodeled for my daughter with two closets and a built-in chest of drawers. Got to finish the family room soon as I'm feeling better and then the last major thing is the master bathroom. Of course some painting here and there but everything has been done with cash so no mortgage or equity loans. Cars will be paid off and low mileage. Should be completely debt free. My wife has always worked so between our two SS checks we should be collecting north of $4k a month which will be mostly tax free. 401k's, Roth accounts and an annuity with all totaled well into six figures. We plan to travel mostly by car here in the states. If health issues hold us back from traveling we at least will be eating steak and lobster till we die. First few years plan to work at least part time so that will delay dipping into retirement money a bit.

Here's Johnny!

I never thought about retirement until COVID happened, it totally destroyed the work force in general (nobody wants to work in an office or regular hours it seems).

I am 56 and have a decent company pension, I have have enough years and age to retire now but...they dock you 5% per year for every year you are below 60. So it is well worth staying at this point. If I do leave at 60 hopefully I can find something a local college to do part time.

House is paid for and we have some GIC investments.

As for health costs, being in Canada most things are covered by the high taxes we pay. That said this Canadian system is failing badly (people dying waiting for treatment etc). You can wait 1 year to get an appointment with a dermatologist unless it is a procedure that isn't covered by the Government...if you have to PAY you can get an appointment the next day!!!!! So 2 tiered health care is already here (has been for a while) but it will transition more IMHO. Education is heading the same way, you can have the bargain basement Walmart version for free or you can pay extra for all the bells and whistles.

What I am seeing is a few of us in a spot.

By Combining or how would you say it. Banding together.

I see a way to support each other. without a shall we say commitment??

Nor the advice or consent of an outward conveyance??

I mean a lot of smart guys here that could set up A flight or a pick up. only trick is getting a Lead who knows his shit.in his department and letting a lead in a different Dept.... How many guys here know how to set up shit. and How many know how to make it work??

Are ya getting what I'm saying??

As a young pup (just turned 38 last week). I have a bit of a different view point. I live in Ohio where the cost of living is considerably lower than some of the blue states out west. The wife and I are debt free (other than a car payment) and I try and budget and save as much as I can. It just never seems to be enough when raising two kids.

If I could retire tomorrow, I would. I would get a part time job somewhere to get me out of the house and keep me busy. Hell, I may even continue to program on the side. I do love what I do and I love where I work. It's a pretty fun job. That said, I love my family and spending time with them. If I could buy a beach house in the OBX and live there I would do it tomorrow. That is my goal. Retire on the beach with my wife. Watch the sunrise and sunset everyday over a glass of coffee and glass of whisky. That is the reason I get out of bed everyday and work hard. So that at 59 1/2 I don't have to anymore. I don't want to be carried out on the gurney at work. I need to figure out a passive income stream...rental properties or something along those lines to supplement my income some more.
