why can't 2 things be true at the same time? Eisenhower could both want to win the war and care about the lives of his soldiers he sending in there to die.

There is no one, local or national, that I feel inclined to vote for. Local politics in Wichita Kansas is like Spinal Tap without the band.

I can care about something personally without jeopardizing the livelihood of others. What I don't do, is make excuses when I do.
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Quote from: beej on August 04, 2023, 09:04 AMAre you talking about the black history curriculum that was written by a team of black men that stated, some black people learned things while they were slaves that helped them when they were free?

You have to admit, the way they framed the response was in bad taste. Then to defend it and double down on it made it look flat out racist.

If I were to say, too bad that girl got raped, but at least she learned a valuable lesson on how not to have sex, would you consider that a defensible position?

Those 'slaves' could have learned those trades as free men?

This would have looked a lot better if everyone would have just said that they made a mistake in their wording.

Quote from: beej on August 04, 2023, 09:04 AMOr are you talking about the fact that Disney was\is promoting gender ideology to children and tried to strong arm the state when Desantis tried to make sure it wasn't being taught to 1st-3rd graders?

This one I would agree with. My only question would be, why now if it wasn't about punishing their right to free speech?

they might be pandering to people like me. Kind of like Democrats pander to black people and don't really care about them.

Have you ever watched the movie "Places of the Heart" with Sally Field and Danny Glover. Sally Field was a widow with a farm and didn't know how to run it. Danny Glover was an ex-slave who was an expert on planting cotton and bailing it. They formed a partnership. The movie didn't seem all that controversial at the time. I guess we need to ban that movie now.

It goes a lot further than a can of beer. The former CEO of AB said that ESG oriented equity companies are putting pressure on companies like AB, Nike, Walmart, Kroger, Dollar General and others to get in line or face financial pressure. They invest heavily in the companies, and then threaten to withdraw those funds, tanking their stock unless they meet the ESG and DEI requirements that these companies impose. It's corporate blackmail.

Desantis is trying to do something to stop that. He's pushing back on that pressure from the other direction. I honestly don't know that this has really done any damage to pensions at all. I am 100% sure that the news is saying so, because right now, they just keep pounding away at anything and everything DeSantis.

Desantis said so. That was one of his arguments.  It could be that he's just playing the media but I doubt it.

That's not blackmail really.  is it?

Make me a gay cake or I'll stop doing business with you?

I might be naive (and am) but if I'm investing in your company and you're doing something I don't like, or in this case, I'm pressuring you to do something that I want, pulling my money isn't blackmail.

I don't have a lot of respect for the companies that cave to that kind of pressure. They have a choice, right?

This isn't too different than protecting politicians who are paid off by special interest groups.

I like voting R so I don't care if they're paid off by lobbyists supporting a company who caused and feeds an opioid crisis.

If I pull my funds I'm blackmailing them?

that's pretty much it except you just need to add in the first step. which is, "We like you company, we'd like to invest in it. Get you a new building, some new ovens, some advertising. Then after all that is done, "bake me a gay cake or this all goes away"
