about every year in august, I decide it would;d be smart to insulate my smallish So. Cal. residence.
Anyone know the ins and outs, or for professional pricing?

I see those spray foam kit are about $1k for the Kali version. Maybe get it done myself (lol) mostly with two kits..

I figure closed cell foam would prevent interior humidity from getting into open cell and rotting the wood.

The savings in Heating and Cooling will definitely differ the cost and then some.

Also noise reduction.

Unless you have an Ex-wife who turns on the AC and opens the doors to your open breeze way so they will be Comfy.

Jesus!! I put in a Cat door so they could get in and Out.

But Nooooo a $600 Electric Bill "must be wrong"

Kali homeowners insurance no longer covers mold. it's interior moisture that is a problem here. My attic i'd guess is 140 degrees right now

Quote from: Newbeeeeâ„¢ on August 29, 2023, 02:28 PMI would avoid spray. If you get a roof leak you don't know. And condensation is a HUGE issue (in the UK) (between spray coat and rafters/roof).
I just bought for my parents house - went for sheeps wool as it's breathable, doesn't itch when laying, not toxic to breathing it, and bloody good insulation qualities. This is rolls and laid onto the loft floor.

I agree I prefer the rolls of Pink Insulation.

I'm really not into sheep like Newbeeee. :o

that's an alternative. Running electrical and burning electrons... I figured insulation would be smarter?

It is But you can set a thermostat so it only comes on at a certain temp.

a wiseguy might disable the AC and call out service. Give him an extra $50 to tell the wife it was 'classic doors left open trouble'

Are you wanting to insulate the roof cavities or between the ceiling joists?

What do you have up there now for insulation?

Is it potential living/storage area or strictly empty attic?

it's all trusses up there being in earthquake country. Never stored anything there

So zero insulation? I'm not sure what standard practice for SoCal is but here in MN we don't care how warm the attic is, the goal is to stop the heat from transferring through the ceiling, so we typically insulate the attic floor with 20+inches of blown in insulation. Works great and definitely the cheaper option.

Those home sprayfoam kits are very finicky. The tanks need to be an exact temperature, they don't feed a consistent spray, take a long time to cover a small area, etc.  They definitely don't work the same as what you may have seen the pro's do. And I can guarantee you are underestimating the amount of material you need because their literature is using perfect conditions, and in an attic there are no perfect conditions. If it's too warm or too cold the foam won't expand or cure properly and you'll be going over it again.

Honestly if you're wanting spray foam go with a pro. Have them at least come out and give a quote. Around here it's almost as expensive to buy a couple kits as it is to hire it done, you know it's done right, and you're not spending 2+ days in the attic.
