Not all vermiculate contains asbestos, we use it at our work here. We have had it tested to double check.

Only the stuff from Libby Montana was contaminated, and I believe they shut down that mine. Other vermiculite is typically safe, unfortunately the Libby mine was the biggest producer (70%) so they just put a blanket 'all vermiculite has asbestos' over it. All newer vermiculite is tested and safe, but really only used for industrial and soil conditioning now.

Does radon affect single story (no basement) dwellings?

Can affect anything, just affects basement homes more because its heavier than air and can be held in the basement like water in a glass for an extended time. If there is a crack or opening in the slab to bare ground then it can seep in, and if its coming in to a place you spend a lot of time, like a bedroom, and its enclosed you can be affected by it.

That I am not sure of, I had never heard of it until I was watching an episode of Holmes on Holmes (A renovation show from Canada where they would fix botched contractors work). They were adding Radon vents to houses, these all had basements though.

This isn't the show but it is Mike Holmes talking about Radon

I was only aware of it for houses with basements. Our new home in Utah has a basement. We needed radon remediation. We got the system put in before we moved in. Before remediation it was over 200 pCi/L Now it's less than 3.

Closed escrow mid-June. Moved full time to Utah August 1st. we left that commie shit hole in the dust. One son moved here last year (got a promotion - works for Wal-Mart on the distribution side - Safety and Loss Prevention Manager), my company has had an office here for some years and they approached me and asked if I'd consider relocating. Talked it over with the family and we agreed it was a good move for everyone. 5 of our 9 grand kids are here so that keeps the wife at least a little happier.

:coffee:

Unfortunately we still have our oldest son and his family there. We're working them though. He can't leave his job. He's invested too much time to walk away (he's an LA County Sheriff with like 15 years in. He's gotta get to I think 20 or it will have all been for naught. Besides, he makes about $185k with O/T... He's NOT gonna make that kind of money in any other department anywhere else. Anyway, he's talked about moving to Montana or Idaho and commuting... like some of his co-workers. We shall see.
