Quote from: CNCAppsJames on September 03, 2023, 07:08 PMThere's at least a few dozen deputies that live in other states, and fly in the day of or day before their shift, stay in an apartment rented with other commuter deputies, and fly out when they are done. Truth be told, if someone lived in say Palmdale or Lancaster (SoCal high desert) and worked in say South LA, they could fly from Boise, Bozeman, SLS, or PHX and have a shorter commute than that drive. The traffic in SoCal is next level. I had a customer in El Segundo (just south of LAX) and it took me just shy of 3 hours to get home... and it's only like 62 miles-ish.

A Nice Hayabusa could cut that time in Half. Barring any doors opening or people deciding to change lanes the last second. ;D

I had a friend pack up the family and move out there from Indiana. He was a real wheeler dealer. Starting up one business or another before selling it off to move onto the next big thing. He was very successful here in Indiana and Michigan but fell flat on his face in Utah. They moved back within a year.

I asked him where he went wrong and he just said, I'm not a Mormon and don't want to be one. Most businesses are owned by Mormons and they want to do business with other Mormons, given the choice. The banks are run by Mormons and they want to loan money to Mormons.

He wasn't pissed about or anything. He absolutely loved Utah. He loads up his RV/Toy Hauler and spends a couple months a year there now.

I think you said what went wrong better than he did. "Wheeler dealer". THAT just doesn't seem to play well here. The business here is based on relationships pure and simple and it's orders of magnitude moreso than many other regions in the US. If you're not in it for the long haul, they'll smell it, and you won't do well.

1 year.... he needed to put in 2 minimum. It's hard. It's like doing business with the Amish and Mennonite communities. It takes REAL work to earn their trust and their business.

Quote from: Newbeeeeâ„¢ on September 05, 2023, 11:32 AMThat sounds like a great place to be. Loyalty to friends - not what you know, but who!!!!

The downside can be that you are considered an interloper. Here in some of the small towns in the Kingdom you aren't a Real neighbor unless you have three generations of relatives buried in the cemetery.
