I was watching Lex Friedman interview Sam Harris over the weekend. Lex is great (if you've never seen his podcast)

Lex asked Sam Harris, "what is the one thing in the future that would disprove your theory of the illusion of free will?"

Sam answered, "nothing can disprove it."

:eye roll:

he went on to say that the "illusion of free will" is an illusion itself. His arguments just keep getting more and more ridiculous.

He might as well say "nothing can prove it" too.

Good discussion guys!

Maybe it should have a separate thread, but I'm wondering about Russell Brand being arrested for sexual assault.

I don't know much about the guy other than he was one of the first and loudest critics of the whole COVID debacle.

The cynic in me thinks that people like that can get arrested for almost anything just to shut them up.
As proof of that, I offer the J6 protesters, many of whom have STILL NOT received due process more than 2 years after the fact.

Only in the most tyrannical banana republics are protesters and critics jailed just to shut them up.

Some of the evidence against him sounds compelling.  It *is* strange that they waited until he (Russel) started stirring up distrust in government and media to go after him.  That doesn't mean that he's innocent. I'll wait to see if he ever gets charged with anything. What it means to me, is that they didn't care until he started rubbing people the wrong way.

Wait, wut?
He IS INNOCENT until proven guilty.

But yeah, we need to wait and see if he is even charged with anything first, or are they just dragging his name through the mud.
All it takes is an accusation and a perp walk anymore to convict someone in the court of public opinion.

Sadly many have forgotten the basic principles of law, and the media is complicit in making sure it stays that way.

I'm not talking about lawfully innocent. I mean it doesn't mean that he didn't do it.

He was accused of having a relationship with a 16 year old but that's legal in the UK, right?

Not sure about UK law.
Maybe Newbeee can shed some light on that.

Anyway, yeah, I would be willing to wager they are just trying to shut him up.

The age of consent in Indiana and several other states is 16 as well.

Are there age restrictions to that?  I mean, do you have to be within two years of that age?  Can a 30 year old date a 16 year old?  If they can, that's disturbing.

That's unrestricted.  Yes any age person could have a relationship with 16yr old.  We found that out the hard way when my niece became enamoured with a 30 something man and my sister found out there wasn't a thing she could do about it.

Any 30 year old man who would date a 16 year old girl is a creep.

How about a 32 year old with an 18 year old?  Or 40 with a 26? Maybe 60 with a 46? 80 with a 66? 100 with 86?

Reality fiss...

My nephew and another buddy of mine used to work together as bouncers in a popular nightclub that was very close to a college campus.  Whenever it was time to escort a drunken, rowdy college student from the premises, my buddy would always tell them the same thing...

He would say, "Look, bro, it's time for you to leave.  You can walk out, or I can just throw you out, but he, (pointing to my nephew) will make you WANT to leave. Your choice..."

The smart ones chose option 'A' probably about 80% of the time.

My point is that creepy older men dating teenagers can easily be given the same choice.

I kinda feel like it gets exponentially less creepy once you're out of an age that has 'teen' after it.

The creeper formula is half your age plus 7. Under and you're a creeper. Equal to, or just over and you're probably rich and/or famous.
