Neurosurgeon says I need a fusion of my Lumbar. Hope to schedule for first of November since my wife has to have a foot of her large intestine removed on the 25th of this month. We can't both be in bed in same week. We woke up one day and turned 80. Neither of us can live with what we have wrong with us. Hopefully all goes well.

Based on that, I am surmising that he believes instability in your back after surgery is likely to be an issue?

I almost cancelled mine after my wife's cancer diagnosis....she talked me out of it, well actually threatened  my well-being if I didn't follow through with it  ;)

When they remove the Lamina they have to do a fusion because nothing is left between vertebrae. They fix one problem by creating another one.

I do not want to contradict your doctor...I had 3 removed, my surgeon told me "I'm not worried about instability in you, if I was I would put some hardware in when I did the surgery".

I did not have the wide version of this surgery where they create a much wider channel opening. I do have one more appt the end of Oct where he's going to verify my back is stable but if that holds up, I'll be released as his patient.

Different variations of the surgery and even difference in "your" person can certainly suggest a certain course is better for one patient vs another.

I'll be pulling for everything to go well and break your way!

I thought they put screws and pins in you?

He did a CT scan and flexed X-Ray to see if he  could skip the fusion. He justdid  read them so I'm not a candidate I guess. I see him in 9 days s and he will explain.

Nope, no hardware....

I had a flex x-ray pre-surgery, I will have another on 10/26 to determine if indeed I am all set..

About your wife's surgery. I had a similar surgery in 2009. I was in the hospital for 8 days. It took that long for my insides to start working again.  Meaning, don't plan on a lot of help for a few weeks.
