So the military's response of course is to lower the standards.  :wallbash:

Here in PA they also recently dropped the requirement for cadets entering the State Police Academy to have at least a 2-year college degree.

One state recently dropped readin', writin', and rithmatic proficiency from high school graduation
requirements because... racism.
I think it was Wisconsin

Personally I think dropping the requirements was racist.

Kali was at least talking about not requiring US Citizenship to become a police officer. No clue if that has gone any further.

Out of curiosity, why is that important?

It shows a degree of persistence, basic intelligence, and teachability.

I think it's a good way to screen out potential candidates who are lacking in those areas before the state commits to spending the money to train them.

At least here in PA, State Troopers have always been viewed as a cut above the rest of law enforcement, much like the Special Forces are to the military.

The State Police training is longer and more rigorous than the average LEO receives, therefore the potential candidates who have already proven themselves by earning a two-year degree would probably stand a better chance of graduating from the academy than the average Joe or Jane off the street.

That makes sense.  I asked because it disqualifies anyone who can't afford a 2 year degree, even though they may be competent enough to do the job.

I do have a few friends that got in to law enforcement and they did go to college, but their goals were geared more towards investigation and forensics.

I tried to be a cop once. (was desperate for a job)

Bastards discriminated against me because I flunked their arbitrary "eye test". I'm pretty sure that was a violation of the ADA.  ;D

Super Troopers definitely proved that as the case.

Yes, that's true, but the best and the brightest always seem to figure out a way to pay for their degree through scholarships and student loans if they can't afford it.
In fact, people who go that route are probably more successful than others who just have everything handed to them.

I will take someone who exerted a little sweat equity any day over someone who just got a free pass.

A good example is a buddy of mine who served with me in the Army National Guard.
He worked mostly part-time nights as a town cop in two different departments so that he could attend classes during the day at a local Junior College.
His family wasn't rich by any means, and he had to manage his money carefully, but he made it work.

Once he earned his Associate's Degree he applied for the PA State Police Academy and was accepted.
He recently retired after 20 years as a State Trooper, and is now serving as Chief of Police in one of those small towns he worked for back in the day.

Like should REALLY be called "work the problem". Because really, you have 2 choices. Either you work the problem, or, the problem works you.

A lot of people don't know this but I was homeless for a short time when I was 21 IIRC.

I took showers at the local community College. For food, I would frequent local office high rises because BITD they had nice spreads. I'd never go to the same one in the same week. Took about a month of working that problem until I got to the next thing to keep me going.

Act like you belong, and WORK THE PROBLEM!
