Quote from: neurosis on October 27, 2023, 04:31 PMHave you paid any attention to what's happening in Florida recently? People are having to either sell their homes or stop paying for insurance because it's become unaffordable.

That's not because of rising ocean levels. That's because insurance companies are in the business of taking money, not paying it out. A few well placed natural disasters leaves a mark on their bottom line. A thick red one.

There's 4 guarantees in life... Ibused to think there were only 2, but with age comes insight... :coffee:

Earthquakes around the Pacific Ring of Fire, Hurricanes on the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico, Death, and Taxes. All 4 are completely unavoidable.

I had some friends that moved to Florida from Washington State. They were trying to get away from the 'crazy politics'.  They sold their house in Puyallup for a ridiculous amount of money and bought a home in Florida that had an indoor pool, 3 bathrooms, 5 bedrooms, for less money.

Fast forward 5 years and they had to sell their dream home and move in to a 5th wheel.

EVERY place has it's issues. Earthquakes, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Flooding, Drought, etc... some places have combinations of these events. I feed bad for them because losing your home for any reason unforseen or not just plain sucks.

I used to have nightmares of losing the house, pool cracking, etc to an earthquakethat WILL happen in the People's Republik of Kommieforniastan.  We couldn't afford the earthquake Insurance so we rolled the dice knowing we could end up short.

Now I'm in a new state wondering what can befall us here. Only time will tell.

Mortgage lender required hurricane insurance?

I haven't questioned them about it.  lol.

I'll probably wait until things settle down.

I tried to look through their facebook photos to post a photo of the house but they deleted all of the pictures of the house.  Guessing they're not happy about losing it.

I like how the first response I read to the video said

"my Homeowners Choice policy went from 2300 to 5900 annually overnight. I said enough and sold my home before the prices drop and bought a five acre rural property and now live in my luxury RV"

Sounds exactly like my friends experience and what they did.  Not sure about the 5 acres.

See, this was why I tried to get out of the conversation with the "my bad".

I'll concede.  You're obviously right.  Sorry yet again.

Sorry, I probably made that a little too personal. If I can dish out the argument for sport I need to be able to take it🤣..

I didn't take it personally.  I rarely take political discussions here or anywhere else seriously, or personally.  :harhar:  It's mostly entertainment to me. In the 17 years on EMC, I'd never seen a single persons mind changed during a political argument and I don't expect to see it happen now. Although Del did convert to a Republican some how

That is happening here in LaLa Land too
We've had some very bad wildfires over the last several years.
One blasted though a small town killing 100+ people.
The resulting lawsuits have hit the power and insures companies for Billions $$$$$$$$$.
Add on the loony tunes green energy BS and power bills are through the roof.
The insurance commission is denying rate increases to the insurance companies and many
are refusing to renew existing policies, not taking on new customers and leaving the state.

All of this is caused by a totally incompetent state government but they have somehow remained blameless,
leaving it's citizens to pick up the tab.

I had Farmer's for years. We had several years in a row of widespread hail and severe weather. My homeowner's insurance increased dramatically, to the point that I had to tell my agent I can't afford this anymore. He told me he thought that the company may be deliberately trying to price themselves out of this state to get out from under all of the weather related damages. I don't know if that's true or not, but it made sense at the time.
