Is it just me, or is Mastercam Lathe unnecessarily convoluted?

Sometimes a change of scenery can be good, as long as it comes with a pay raise

You remember eWC from 15 years ago?
You remember everyone bitched that lathe was a PITA and never got any development love?
Well....

Yes. I remember all of the posts about how MC Lathe never got any love.

If you think lathe is convoluted....MillTurn is like lathe on the super steroids the Soviets were using in the Olympics in the 70's.

It doesn't appear to have changed much since i was in school, and that was ages ago

The interface has definitely changes.  A lot of the older youtube video's aren't relevant anymore. Quite a few things have been moved around and it's almost less intuitive.  If that's possible.

Interesting, maybe I will put that to the test, I have my Mastercam X2 lathe book, I could try following the tutorials and see what is different.

I definitely didn't find lathe unintuitive around X5, the aerospace company I worked for was using x7 when i started, when I left for the last time 5 years later they were on 2024.

I was behind all of the upgrades and it didn't change much for us, other than the ribbon bar and the machine group stuff recently, but I wasn't involved in the lathe programming, so I can't say how much it has changed.

The behind the scenes coding stuff doesn't really change so its possible that that gives me the false impression that things largely stayed the same.

Mastercam Lathe fucking sucks! It always has. Been a Mastercam user since the late V8 days.
I hate using it, but I have to from time to time to do fancy grooves that somehow no lathe conversational control on the planet can do.

For a product that has been available since X7(2012), here we are in 2023 and while they have done a lot of work under the hood, I am amazed it still feels SO MUCH like an incomplete product.

Sure, I can get the jobs done I need to but man, it never got over that "lipstick on a pig" feeling or workflow.

What is it you don't like about it?
Just curious

It's extremely clunky to use and not user friendly. Granted I don't use it everyday, but over the course of the last 25-ish years I've used it a ton. And mainly only for doing pulley grooves and some fancy face groove contours. You'd think it would be a cakewalk since I can program most of my 2D mill paths blindfolded at this point.

And have you seen how much b.s. you have to do in order to create a 3D tool?

We just upgraded to mill/turn about a year ago for a job we were supposed to have for a long time. Well, that job is gone and the machine sits.
But I've tried following the video, my "reseller" even gave me a small video on how to even start a mill/turn environment and set it up but I must be a complete moron because I can't even get past that point. It shows my chuck in the wrong Z location, the part is too far in the Z- location, etc...
Tried many many times over and over, restart from scratch and always end up with the same result.
Even when I follow the video step by step. Fuck that. I hate it.

Have you thought about requesting graphical toolpath editing?  :fun:
