Quote from: Smit post_id=3662 time=1610820417 user_id=66I usually buy Turbo tax and install it on my computer but I think I might be able to use the free edition this year.

My wife didn't work in 2020 so I only have 1 W2 form. No mortgage or tax deductible loans so I believe I might be able to use the simplest form there is.

Is there an upper limit to income for this form? Any other hidden restrictions?

The answer to your question is probably buried in this page somewhere.

I am looking forward to the day when I can do my own taxes. But I am a S Corporation, so I depend on my tax expert to keep my taxes low and to take advantage of any grey area.

My concern isn't with them losing my information. In fact, I'd like them to lose my information!    My concern is that they have ALL of my information stored. I'd like to think they have good security, but we all thought that about Equifax and look how that turned out.

When I install TT on my desktop computer, the files are saved on my computer. When I e-file, (I believe) TT encrypts the data and sends it to the IRS. Nowhere in that process is all of my information in Intuit's possession. That's the way it should be. Imagine Intuit getting hacked. Full name, address, DOB, SSN, bank name, bank routing numbers...it's all there. My first thought is that doesn't sound too terribly attractive. That's my concern.

I returned my TT to the store today. They looked at it a few times to make sure everything was there, but they gave me a full refund. They only offer a refund on un-opened software.

I decided to use the online version, though I'm still not completely happy with that decision. Anyway, at the beginning, you select which version (free, paid advanced, etc) you'd like to use based on some info they provide. If you happen to get to a point in your return where you no longer meet the requirements of that level of return, they'll let you know. I selected the free easy return but when I got to my IRA contributions, it let me know that I had to use the upgraded version in order to continue.

I don't want to derail this, but has anyone tried filing through Credit Karma?

Don't do it.
I did mine on Credit Karma and got bad Karma.
They made me put it on an Amercian Express debit card that doesn't work half the time.

I am a huge fan of turbotax, been using it at least 8 years now and its super easy to file taxes for me using it. Its probably the same price for me on turbotax as going to someone to have it done since i always have to pay for turbotax since they dont have free tax filing for people that have traded any stocks but the reason i like it is i can login and get all my tax documents from one place and i can do it myself any time i want. Like my w2 came in already from my work, so i put that in then logged out. sometime in febuary ill end up getting my tax info from my brokerages and then ill simply login and finish up the rest of the process, so its nice that you dont have to do it all one day either.

So for me, im a huge fan of turbotax. they also processed my Stimulus checks super fast this year.

Credit Karma has some decent features but is mostly a platform for pushing credit cards and personal loans.

I  couldn't get comfortable with the online tax software so I bought Turbo tax deluxe for $40.

I've always heard that if somebody is providing something free then you are the product.
