We had an earthquake last night.
It was a 4.2,  8 miles away from my house and 9.6 miles deep
USGS Earthquake Report

It rattled my house really hard cause it's built on about 10 feet of soil on a granite mountain.
There were 2 big hits about 3 seconds apart.
The second hit was still happening when my phone went off with an emergency alert,
telling me how big it was, how far away and how deep.
So.. within 2 seconds of the first hit they were sending out alerts with all the details of the quake.
That is really amazing.

Hmm, familiar territory, thats for sure.

We are still getting shakes, and yes, they seem to have the alerts well sorted. In fact, we have had alerts before the shake even reaches us. I agree, amazing.

People in Cali are amazed that tech exists to inform them within seconds of an earthquake.
I'd be loading up my truck and moving out of Cali.... after I loaded my pants.
F that!
Tornadoes are bad enough.

You're aware you live adjacent to a fault line?

QuoteMany of the strongest quakes in recent years have occurred in Wabash Valley. Some believe the seismic zone is capable of producing "New Madrid-sized" earthquake events.

Most of the mapped faults are located in an area that extends from southeastern Illinois into southwestern Indiana and western Kentucky.

Yeah I'm aware. I talked to a geologist friend of mine first about possible damage. Also found out that earthquake insurance carry's an extremely high deductible. You guys may want to check that out on your own policy   My agent doesn't even carry it.

Earthquake insurance deductible is a percentage of your total homeowners coverage. My policy from Lloyds of London is 20 %. My coverage is for $300,000. So I'd have to pay $ 60,000 deductible. I'll take my chances.

When I got a quote for coverage in our old house... I about passed out. The ONLY way that policy would have paid for itself would have been in the event of a complete and TOTAL dwelling loss. Anything less than that, and I was literally paying for nothing. So we always rolled the dice. The odds for complete and total dwelling loss were really quite small. It would require something on the order of a sustained 6.5+ quake with an epicenter very close to the dwelling. While certainly possible, where we lived, highly unlikely.

Life is all about calculated risk.

That was the kicker. Not only was the coverage cost eye watering, the deductible was just absolutely absurd.

So the mortgage company doesn't require it like they do with flood insurance in flood planes?

No.  They don't require it.
