We had to kill all the fish to save them

They've been tearing down dams in the Pacfic Nothwest to save the salmon.
It's not going as planned

QuoteDam removal is expected to improve the health of the Klamath River, the route that Chinook salmon and endangered coho salmon take from the Pacific Ocean to their upstream spawning grounds, and from where the young fish return to the sea."

It sounded good on paper – at least it did to the bureaucrats agitating for it.

But according to local officials, "it's an environmental disaster."

"I've been around natural disasters all of my life, and I've never seen anything like this," Siskiyou County Supervisor Ray Haupt recently told the Globe. "The river is essentially dead, as is everything in it."

Haupt was a District Ranger in the Klamath National Forest for 33 years, retired in 2010, and now owns a Forest and Natural Resources Consulting Business. He is a California Registered Professional Forester, a member of the California Professional Foresters Association, an Ag advisor for Etna High School and the College of the Siskiyous tech programs, and is an author of multiple Forest Management and Fire Policies for NAFSR, the National Association of Forest Services Retirees.

Haupt said the sediment plume extends 2 miles into the ocean. And he and local residents are witnessing a massive salmon extinction event.

The damns they knocked down here were built in the 1920's
There was a 100 years worth of sediment piled up in the lakes behind those dams
When they blew the damns the sediment ran down the river as very fine silty mud
killing everything in it's path.
The article I linked to is a tough read.
One could make a legitimate argument that the damns should never have been built in the first place,
but the eco-zealots who knocked them down didn't think through the consequences of releasing all that
silt into the river.
Left alone, the river will come back, but it will take generations.
The Indian tribes who feed themselves from that river and were the biggest proponents for taking down the damns
have put paid to the way of life they were trying to preserve, probably forever.

Hopefully they're paying attention to this in Washington State.

You're not laughing at the natives are you?  They're the one's fighting to get these dams removed.

I'm laughing at you thinking any of the dam haters are thinking of the negative impacts.

If you've read anything about it, they've already considered the short term negative impacts.

There were unintended consequences (like deer getting stuck in the mud and dying). I hope that they (the natives who are fighting for this) are paying attention. And they may have already considered it and believe that the long term benefit is worth the short term consequences.

Most of the fish that are dying weren't native to the river. They waited until a break in the salmon runs to allow for the sediment to clear before the next run. They knew that the oxygen levels in the river were going to drop.

I don't know much about that particular river system other than what I've read after G's article and looking at a few others, but from the sounds of it, it was costing more to maintain these dams than the benefit coming from them and they were already having several negative environmental impacts.. They were going to have to do one of two things. Build salmon ladders, or tear the dams down.

I think that the Washington State fight is a little more complicated. At least from my meager understanding of what's going on.

In case you needed something else to LOL at.

And by the way, the "dam haters", at least in Washington State, ARE the natives.

Quote from: Newbeeee™ on February 28, 2024, 05:48 AMHmmmm....you see, this works both ways.
Because on said "alternative" platforms, there's much info regarding for instance, health.
Stuff that "mainstream" laughs off.
And stuff that Joe Public also laughs off, because, well, "it's crazy talk innit".
Because Joe Public, has been "led to believe"....Joe Public, has been "convinced". With nothing more, than (MSM)News, or (Te Lie Vision) Programmes, or (filtered search) Google....etc etc.
But when you then start searching, you can find the older information. Which can be an eye opener.
Some VERY contradictory, to "modern belief", or course....

Do you think that the impact that these social media companies has had on our youth has been positive or negative? Even if you just narrow it down to information and not look at the desocialization aspect of it?

Quote from: Newbeeee™ on February 28, 2024, 06:11 AMNegative - because all they're doing is fucking about and having a laugh!

All of that "fucking about" is molding the political opinions of future generations and not all of the information they're getting is good. Some might call it misinformation? We're all suseptable to it.

QuoteMy worry is the Govs lock it all down - which obviously they've talking about - that will be shite.
But Gov fuck up everything, so it's more likely to happen than not.

I worry about certain types of information being locked down based on whoever might be in power at the time.

Not just negative but catastrophic.

if the only negative for kids/teens and social media was the "negative self image" aspects that come from social media it would such a bad thing as it should not be allowed, but the fact that these kids and teens are mutilating their bodies and questioning things they have no business even knowing about, it should be criminal what the social media companies are doing. Throw in the cyber bullying, the Social Contagion, the ADD, the mis/dis-information and security implications and it's not just tragic, it's beyond dangerous.

EVERYONE should know that the leaders at these Social Media companies do not let their own children participate in it. That right there alone shoudl tell you how harmful Social Media is.
