been running what i though was a premium router at home for some time; an asus rt-ac87u It was a really cool deal to be able to plug-in VPN credentials so that every WiFi connection was routed to internet via VPN, without having to monitor or remember on your device. it's over 5 years old. I've thought i was stuggling with poor VPN provider through-put, limited to around 30 Mbs which eneded up throttling Netflix and frustrating everyone. Happy wife, happy life, she would switch of the router's VPN when needed, so there was some back and fourth.
Just upgraded to an asus RTAX86u pro for $200 on amazon. Decent blend of price and online review specs. Oh what a life hack. Not only is the VPN throughput around 100Mbs, but you can have two active simultaneously (both openVPN and WIREGUARD now) and select which devices are segregated to which route.
Old router through PC wiFi connection could only pull 280Mbs without the vpns using T-Mobile 5G cellular network. New router was pulling almost 500Mbs which is much faster than the 300Mbs service. only charging $40/mo with our cell phone service. Spectum wouldnt budge on $70/mo.
Happy camper at the moment. 8)

That's a nice router.

I have the RT-AX88U. I've been using this thing for years and I love it.

We've got Wasatch Broadband . https://www.wasatchbroadband.net/#plans ... the 500mbs plan. With these guys we had to provide our own router. We chose a TP-Link Deco AC something 6E.

Before that we had XFinity... and a Arris Surfboard (was the flagship model last year.  It was dogshit and so was XFinity. I'll go dialup before I'll go with XFinity again.

We are still stuck with cable as the best choice for internet in my area with a 250 Mbps limit.

They have been running new fiber optic cable all over the area for probably the last 6 months or so, and we are seeing billboards all over the area advertising fiber optic internet coming soon.

As soon as it is available I am there...

T-Mobile 5G internet here..just tested at 475 down/70 up

Stream several tv's, devices and phones...for $50/month and getting to have no Xfinity, it is well worth the cost.

I completely dumped the router, bought a Motorola Cable Modem (Xfinity), a Protectli Vault device and loaded PfSense firewall.
That feeds to a Unifi POE switch that feeds everything including 3 access points thru out my house.
I now have 4 different Vlans,,,, Home, CAM_Lan, HA_Iot, and Guest. Each with it's own access rights.

Just set your wifi router up as an access point and plug it in to the switch.

I'm running Spectrum cable 1gig service @ $119/month
It consistently runs in the 850 to 950 down and 40 up
I used to split the bill 50/50 between my contracting business
and my personal account, but since the idiots that run this state
made contracting illegal I pay it all myself now.
