The Boy Scouts organization has died

https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/r-i-p-boy-scouts/

The Boy Scouts were founded 114 years ago during another acknowledged crisis for masculinity. Groups such as the YMCA and the Boy Scouts were meant to address what was seen as the de-masculinization of society, as people moved to urban centers and out of the country. The Scouting movement received crucial support from Teddy Roosevelt, America's most popular president. The mission was "to teach [boys] patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred values."

In recent decades, the Boy Scouts have, like other all-male groups, been subjected to ideological attack and institutional destruction masquerading as reform. Though the Girl Scouts had long been part of the Scouting movement, the Boy Scouts were opened up to girls years ago. Controversies over homosexual Scouting leaders, expensive lawsuits related to sexual abuse, and the culture wars drove gigantic institutional splits. The Mormon Church, a huge pillar behind the modern Boy Scouts, split off to found its own Scouting organization in 2018, pulling 400,000 boys with them. In recent years, a much declined Boy Scouts was ripped in half.

We are more than a decade into a new panic about boys and men. Unfortunately for boys and men, the current gurus putting themselves forward to save manhood have trouble even justifying to contemporary audiences that boys and men have unique and distinctive emotional, developmental, and spiritual needs. In the absence of this acknowledgment, they cannot justify the existence of institutions built to meet these needs exclusively. No wonder that the Boy Scouts of America has announced its intention to change its name to "Scouting America," an organization dedicated to progressive values, like all other approved institutions. Of course Scouting America, like churches similarly dedicated to progressive values, offers no compelling reason to join or maintain it. They offer a formation in values that can be had, for example, by watching television commercials. Just interact with all the major corporations and nonprofit foundations, or respond to government-set incentives, and you will get the same moral formation that Scouting America is now presumably dedicated to providing.

They died SO long ago.

When they won the lawsuit at SCOTUS... the one allowing them to specify membership under the freedom to associate... or not, two years after that they started caving. Why? All companies have employee handbooks. In those handbooks outline a company's discrimination policies. The homosexual groups within the Boeing's, the AT&T's, the Verizon's, etc... went to their company's boards an protested donating to an organization that discriminates. Thus ending much of it's corporate funding.

Rather than sell off their opulent assets (BSA HQ), excess property, etc... they opted to cave, thus decimating  their ranks. Allowing Openly homosexual scouts was the 1st nail, the final 2 nails was allowing girls and openly homosexual Scout Leaders.

I was in Scouting as a Committee Member for a couple years, then Assistant Scoutmaster for a couple years, then Scoutmaster for 7, and finally another stint as Assistant Scoutmaster for the final 2.

Our Troop... Troop 101 Pomona California (Originally Troop 1, but after several council mergers it got changed) Chartered in Octomer 1910. They were the oldest Troop west of the Mississippi River.  I was it's 2nd to last Scoutmaster.  My youngest son was it's 2nd to last Eagle Scout in 2020. Covid year. He did his Eagle board of review over Zoom.

EVERYTHING social "progressives" touch turns to shit

It's really a shame.

Which nail was the 80,000 claims of sexual abuse and the bankruptcy the settlements caused?

I never really read much about the claims but remember hearing about it pretty consistently for a few years. I couldn't even give an opinion on whether or not the claims are true.   It most certainly gave the organization a huge black eye.
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

That is definitely part of it.

They could have weathered that. They put in place policies that fundamentally changed how troops function. Background checks, two deep leadership, and some troops went even further.

The molestation were atrocious. Just like The Catholic Church... those that covered it up should have faced prosecution

Today, that could very well be a thing.

The interesting Stat I'd like to see are the number of girl boy scouts that got pregnant 9 months after Scout Jamboree.

They probably aren't gonna share that Stat.

Once, when I was at Scout camp, we were working toward our swimming merit badge. One of the requirements was to do a "survival swim". We did it in the pool, at night. You were supposed to slide in at one end, completely silently: no splashes, no drips, etc. Then we swam, doing sort of a breaststroke to the other end of the pool and got out, also silently.
The councilors were sitting around the edge of the pool in lawn chairs. If, at any point, you made an audible sound, they would throw a potato in your direction, just close enough so you knew you were caught. I think most of us finally passed.

That is the memory the vast majority of Scouts' experience.

I was never a Scout as a kid. Never had the opportunity to join, or never knew what it was honestly.  My parents weren't the "we're gonna get you involved in stuff" type of parents.

The first I had heard of the Boy Scouts (fourth grade in Ohio) they were considered people who the bullies beat up. I didn't know any Boy Scouts so I didn't know if bully part was correct. When we moved to Michigan there were a lot of Boy Scouts that acted more like what I wound consider real people but I never joined up. The stigma was still in me from Ohio.
