"Clearing the chamber" is just a variation of "cleaning the gun"...
That's almost always just a euphemism for "playing with his gun and it went off". 

In no universe is having your finger on the trigger part of "clearing the chamber".
Since there is no way the gun can fire a round without the trigger being actuated, he either has ZERO idea how it functions, or he was just playing around with it and fired off a round unintentionally.

Glad nobody got hurt, but he should at least be honest and own up to his dumassery.

I'll always remember one day at the shooting club, I was out shooting a few rounds of skeet, an older gentleman had just finished up and was breaking down his over/under to put in its case. He was apparently in a lively conversation with someone else, took the barrel off, grabbed his dry fire shell to release the firing pins, pulled the trigger, **POP**! People who heard the commotion ran over. Once the smoke cleared there he is white as a ghost holding an empty shell. And a range Marshall who was exiting the bathroom 10 feet away checking himself for holes.

OK yeah, the 'pre-fix' P320 issue maybe, possibly...

But again, the whole 'I was clearing the chamber' statement makes me think the guy had his booger hook on the bang switch and just doesn't want to admit it...
