Well, this is a little concerning

We accrue our vacation weekly, with the amount depending on years of service. It was supposed to show up today. It didn't, at least for everyone I work around.

I heard on the debate last night.

Joe is making a Presidential executive order , "Banning Vacations" ;)

Seriously , If I was working there I would be concerned about being given a Permanent Vacation. :o

mowens programs a quajillion dollar, one of a kind carbon fiber wrapping machine.
he is one of about 2 guys on the planet that know how to make that machine dance.
I suspect he will be just fine, but if things go bad, he will be turning off the lights as the last guy out the door.

That depends. We have all seen a mid to high level manager from the company buying the other company, thinking he is going to hero, cutting all the long time experience to save a little bit in labor. That happens all the time. Yes you have xx years of experience, but we can hire this guy with x years of experience for 70% of your salary.

I sincerely hope that the uniqueness of our brother's expertise sees him through the next chapter unscathed. What a wild situation unfolding

Everyone is expendable. The minute you think you are not is when you'll suddenly be on the street wondering what happened. When Boeing sold the Wichita plant to begin with, everyone had to apply for their old jobs back. A lot of people didn't make it. My age may work against me.

For Incog:  a crooked bony middle finger is slowly extending upward out of a knarly old fist. Because I can't find the damn emoji.

I was just having the conversation with a couple of my kids the other day. It was in regards to having savings and not going to far into debt. I tell them start now when you don't have a lot of obligations and keep 6 months of living expense cash in a form that is not too hard to access without fees. Keep your debt/living cost to income ratio so you can always save monthly 5%-10% minimum of your pay to build up your savings. Also that should be relative to the job you have, jobs skills/experience, and market demand for them. If you end up in a high paying job that would be very hard to replace, you need to save more while you can. My kids always say life seems so easy for me. I tell them it wasn't always that way and it took me a long time to realize that one of the biggest factors to a peaceful life is freedom from financial stress.

Losing this job would be a massive blow, no doubt. But, my coworker is a young guy under thirty with a wife and three kids. He's a sharp guy with good programming skills. He gave up art school when his girlfriend got pregnant and started running a machine. He went to community college and learned Mastercam. He worked his way through several shops, staying a year or two at each one. He's been here 5 years now.

If it came down to it, I'm not sure I'm enough of an asshole to let him get walked out instead of me.

Over 20 years ago, I had that same thing done to me.  At the time, i had no idea.  a few months later the owner explained to me that a few people were on the list.  my mentor had seen the list and told the owner he was leaving regardless of who was let go.  He was an amazing prototype guy.  I was fresh off being a button pusher on the verticals and he got me into the horizontal department and was teaching me how to program.  had the pleasur of taking him fishing about a year later and i told him he didn't have to do that.  he just smiled and said " Kid, it was just a job for me, but it was a great opportunity for you"
