Quote from: JakeL on July 10, 2024, 06:30 AMKind of a long shot here but is it large companies offering? Or small machine shops asking?

I can't speak for every one of them but I know that at least 3 of the mid tier shops were propositioned by Primus. I still talk to the owner of one of the shops. The others I know through the 'good ole boy' network.

The two shops in Auburn were purchased and then combined. Both owners walked away with a LOT of money. The guy I still talk to is living his best life right now and has been retired ever since.

The down side; I knew at least 20 people who worked for those shops either before, or right after they were purchased. Literally none of those people work there anymore. Read in to that what you will. I'm not going to go in to that any further.

For sure bro, when Safran bought Zodiac Aerspace they closed a facility right away and laid off hundreds of people at the one where I was. Iirc quite a few people were let go when mastercam was bought too, I feel like that's the norm

Quote from: Thee Byte on July 10, 2024, 06:29 AMAnyway I would say your bestest guy at setup should be doing them, I bet that's you at your place isn't it Jake?

Honest answer, I never did enough setup to get good at it. I can setup a repeat job just as good as our best guys, but I have very little experience proving out new programs. And as much as I would love to run a machine every once in a while, I'm a full time programmer.

My dad's been machining 30+ years, I lean on his experience a lot for my programming. He's the closest we have to a setup guy. He's the one who ran many of our repeat jobs the first time around.

I feel like most of these large aerospace companies care more about pleasing share holders than they do about employing competent people.

PCC is the big dog for sure. Safran is a big player as well. Lately though some shops have been acquired by some investment groups.

They all make the one same mistake looking at shops - they assume their golden formula works, where you cut expenses by 15% and that adds 40% straight to the profits. Easy!
Because as we all know, there's HUGE profit in the small shop game.
HUGE.
Isn't there...

Some of the ones I've seen have been a net positive for those shops and influx of capital and investing in newer machines. They buy understanding they need to invest to make the company more efficient...

THEN they cut expenses by  15% and add profit to their bottom line
