IMO, Biden is probably already dead or extremely close. His brother talked to the press yesterday and said "with the time we have left to spend with him" in reference to Joe. The thing is, this secrecy is being driven by the divide in the party. There are definitely legal concerns in some states about replacing Joe this late in the game. Most of those easily allow for Kamala to get his electors. A switch candidate is where things get tricky. If he is dead already, they will wait until Kamala wraps up the nomination to announce it.

There is also the issue of Biden's $200+ million in campaign funds. Federal election law has very specific rules about when how that can be transferred. IMO, this was the reason why they were doing the accelerated push for virtual voting before the DNC convention. They were worried for Joe's viability and wanted to lock it up so it is an easier transfer to Kamala.

However, as we saw in 2020, Dems don't give an eff about election laws. They will do what they want and no one will hold them accountable.
