Quote from: JakeL on July 19, 2024, 04:28 AMI think it was in one of the annual SDK livestreams, they said that style interface is the direction they're headed with the whole software. I believe I heard the same thing from our reseller. IIRC the main reason for the switch is because the functionality of the current interface is limited by todays standards.

@Thee Byte has a better understanding (and probably better explanation) of this.
The push for simpler interfaces is to make adoption of the software easier for new users, Mastercam is also trying to convert their interfaces to WPF from MFC, for a more modern look, Jake it's important to note that WPF is obsolete and Microsoft wants us developing in WinUI3 or UWP, which offers modern features such as 3D menus, however in the case of Mastercam, that would involve a c++\CX DLL to work with your c++ or .net DLL, not an easy task

So they don't want to jump to WinUI3 because they don't want to make extra work for 3rd party developers and possibly more work for themselves? Am I missing something here? Because this feels kind of backwards to me. Seems like they're taking a step backwards in an effort to support the minority (new users and 3rd party devs).

Well, WPF has more features than MFC, but they aren't simply redoing the same UI in WPF, they are simplifying the interfaces.

As for WinUi3, if the 3RD party developers wanted to they could use it and append their WinUi3 controls to the WPF or MFC ones, they aren't limiting us in any way, my favorite was probably the UWP with c++, because you have the visual editor and u can drag xaml element in the tree view to re-arrange the hierarchy.

The shop owners uncle died in his chair at work. Thankfully he wasn't still working here at the time.

The lead programmer here died in 2012, though not at work, thankfully.
He was a heavy drinker, heavy smoker and his diet consisted of roach coach burritos, purchased at 7AM
when the roach coach came and eaten at noon during the lunch break.

On Thursdays, he'd bum a ride to the "bank" (code word for bar) where he would cash his paycheck and
drink till closing time. Then he'd catch a cab home. Needless to say his work quality on Friday's was occasionally problematic.

One Thursday night he collapsed as soon as he got home from the "bank".
They hauled him off to the hospital and put him in an induced coma and life support.
They turned him off 3 days later.
The diagnosis was sepsis, brough on by a chronic case of walking pneumonia.
He was 60 years old and one hell of a good old school programmer, when he was sober.

This guy was a very similar story. He ate like crap. He would go out the the bar a few nights a week and stay until closing. You could always tell because when he would come in to work the next morning he smelled like a stale wet rag soaked in bourbon. When he was hungover like that he was impossible to work with so the shop owner eventually got rid of him.  Must have been tough to fire your own Uncle.

A couple of years later he went to work one morning after a bender and sat in a chair at his desk. A couple of hours later people started to notice that he hadn't moved in a while. That was all she wrote.

My man. We have to be able to express our emotions. It's those moments of vulnerability that bond those who remain - you never know who else at the table needs to feel as well.

We've all experienced loss, some more than others, and nobody worth respecting would look down on you for having feelings of sorrow with regards to lost colleagues. We're with you, brother

I'd love to learn from you. Hardest part is finding the time. I enjoy CNC programming and the shop I'm at, but I'd love to do more CHook development.
