When I was 10 I lived with my Aunt in Dallas Texas. 

Before we ate anything we had to pick the cockroaches out of it. 

That included our cereal, sugar, rice, crackers.. Anything that wasn't sealed.

Why didn't you just accept the cockroaches? They get hungry too.

I was washing dishes at 5 and cleaning.

I washed toilets with comet and scrubbed showers.

We lived in a 5 story apartment building. It didn't matter how clean your apartment was. It mattered how clean all of your neighbors apartments were.

I lived with a what someone told me was a grandma a couple of years before that. It was a house in a Dallas suburb.  She had about 10 kids living there. No idea who they were.  They/we had to clean the house.  We got rid of the roaches in that house. 

It's a hard knock life.

That was my friend growing up. By the time he moved in with his grandparents (next door to me), he'd probably been in at least 6 places that I knew of. Mom was a biker chick and loved that life more than she loved her 3 kids... by 3 different men. She didn't get her shit together until the mid-90's. By then her two sons (my friend and his brother) were pretty much lost causes. Addicted to all kinds of shit. His sister... she got pregnant at like 17 and snapped out of the life, got her shit together, moved away. Got married and is squared away.

I had a very similar story.  My dad was in and out of prison until I was 11.  My mom went through a series of shit relationships.  Most of them were abusive.  My sister took the worst of it.  My mom, knowing that my dad was fucking nuts, was afraid to put me in to those situations so passed me off on several different families to keep me out of the fray. Luckily most of those families were related to us. Some weren't.

The first time my dad got out of prison he beat one of her boyfriends up so bad that he got put straight back in to jail.   

I lived with "daddy" from the time I was 11 until I was about 16 when I ran away from home.  He was ex military and very damaged.  I don't think we lived in a single town for more than a year until I was 16 when I ran away. 

It was a pretty crazy life.  I'm surprised I'm a functional adult. lol

I think the ONLY thing I had going for me was my home life was moderately stable aside from my dad being a functioning alcoholic. Or at least as stable as a latch-key drug addict kid's life in the 80's can be.

Grateful to have made it out alive. Out of the 11 guys I hung with as a kid... only like 4 or 5 of us are still alive to tell the tale.

Most of the friends I hung out with between 16 and 20 are all drug addicts.  I don't talk to any of them anymore.

When I was 17 I was high on acid at a party and some dip shit was pouring gas on a fire to get it started. The can caught on fire and he threw it.  It went over my head and splashed me with gas and I caught on fire.

Luckily I had a fairly sober friend standing next to me who tackled me and put me out.

When we talked about stopping the drugs.. that was the night I stopped.

Luckily the scars are all under the shirt line so I don't look like a freak.
