Saturday I flew up to Cleveland. I got there at 1:30 p.m. and at 4:00 p.m. I was in the back of an ambulance on the way to the hospital. In my daughter's house there is a large step about 8 in between the kitchen and the den. I was at the kitchen table playing with my 6-year-old granddaughter when I scooted my chair a little too close to the step. One leg of the chair slipped over and I was on my way. I landed on my shoulder and my head. So I have a badly broken collarbone that may or may not need surgery.I will find out in 2 weeks. The flight home yesterday was not fun.

Ouch!  Glad you made it home ok.  Get better soon. I've heard that collar bone injuries are the worst.  :(

Oh man...that sucks.
Hope everything turns out ok.

Our Labor Day weekend wasn't great either.
We went camping as usual with my older sis and her husband and had a great time, but my bro-in-law's younger brother Glenn was in the ICU with congestive heart failure and pneumonia for the past week.

Glenn was doing ok, and other family members kept us updated all weekend, but I know my bro-in-law was still worried.

He got a call Monday morning from the hospital saying Glenn took a turn for the worse, so we packed up and left the campground for home.
He passed away Monday night.

At least his immediate family got to see him one last time, so we were thankful for that.
Funeral arrangements pending this week...

Jim, I'm sorry about Glen; that sucks for everyone.

The surgeon says I'm on the fence as to whether or not I'll need surgery to fix it. I go back in 2 weeks to evaluate. I'm probably a pansy but this hurts like a b****. Haha voice to text is censoring me.

Broken collar bone sucks.  You don't realize how many muscles pull or push on your shoulders until that bone is broken.  Did they put you in one of those slings that pull your shoulders back or do they have better methods now?  Hope you have a quick recovery.

Sorry for your loss Jim.

Apparently, they don't use the figure 8 slings much anymore. The hospital in Ohio had me in a sling with a strap that went around my waist to hold it in place. Yesterday the surgeon said I didn't need that, I could just use a regular sling. It's my left side and I'm right-handed so that's a blessing.

You are right about how everything affects your collarbone. Right now the only way I can move my left arm without a lot of pain is to use my right arm to position it. According to the surgeon, in 2 weeks I should be able to hold my arm out to the side. If I'm not able to do that, then we'll look at surgery.

I was curious how it would heal if there was nothing done to align the bones. The surgeon said that the bones will build a sheath around the broken ends. It will look funny but it will be strong.

A friends 4 year old broke his collarbone in June, you should be healed up in 2 maybe 3 weeks.  :fun:

I never did like those sunken living rooms with no railing. An unnecessary fall hazard for unsuspecting guests.

Heal up quick Mike!

My son broke his when he was four. It wasn't his fault though, his sister kicked him off the bed they were playing on.
That was actually the second time he had broken his collarbone. When he was born, he kind of got stuck and they pulled him out with the tongs that looked like salad forks. It broke his collarbone on the way out.

I guess it's kind of like a family tradition now.

I've got no personal experience with broken bones, but I've been told broken collar bones are very painful.
Take it easy and obey your doctors. We don't heal up as quickly as we used to when we were teenagers.
