I think that there are a lot of intelligent youth.  I just don't think that most of them are interested in this kind of work.

I can't say that I blame them necessarily?

There's A LOT of shops out there that young people today definitely would not be down for the cause at. That said, I continue to see workplace improvements on the regular that make the manufacturing job more pleasant. We still have a long way to go to make more appealing, but it's at least trending in that direction.

It all starts at exposure to REAL manufacturing not that ersatz shit that the majority of STEM is pumping out there.

Maybe that's the key.  I'm not even sure what that means really?  I came up in a pretty rigid environment.

That is a good point.

We lost almost two generations of tool makers and I'm not sure what the equivalent is these days? All of the thinking is done in offices and in programming rooms these days?

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Well lit work areas, bathrooms that don't look like a middle of nowhere no-name gas station bathroom that hasn't been cleaned since before Clinton was getting blowjobs in the WH.

We DID lose two generations of tool makers.

When I got started in manuacturing in 1991-ish, the average age of Tool and Die Makers was 55. Today it's almost 61.

Depends on the company wher ethe "thinking" takes place. The most successful ones I see are where people's skillsets developed and utilized instead of squashed.

Man, I love manufacturing, machining, workflow processing, and everything else in between.  The problem (at least in defense manufacturing) is the moo-la tops out too early.  For some reason programmers are seen as blue collar labor in my area.
I had to go back to school, get a bull shit degree to get into something respectable and get 6 figures.  Now it's pretty much a max of 40 hours, I'm basically my own boss, and much more administrative-ish work.  I work with software nerds everyday, so I'm a little outta my comfort for sure.  I'm a test guy working in fire control systems (things that go boom, not 911 fires lol) and it's really interesting learning new things.

Programmers are both blue and white collar. At least the good ones are.

"Money" is the easy part. Change the scope of work your company can do and you can command AND get the money. Maintain the status quo and you always get "meh" money.

I made a choice decades ago; care about the important things related to the job. What are the important things? Shipping GOOD parts. Making those around you better. Train that young mechanical/manufacturing engineer. Make him/her better. Make your boss look good... even if you don't like them personally. If you can't do that, you should find a place where you can. Always be learning. Go the extra mile. Change the scope of work your company/department can pull off.  Take pride in what you do.

Do those things and the rest of the stuff and other things take care of themselves.

That should ALWAYS be the end goal IMHO.

I can't find anyone that wants to take my job though.

I think that James is smarter than Trump?

I am DEFINITELY NOT smarter than Trump. He turned $25m into $1B+.

I should have at least $10m in assets by now, and I am not even in that galaxy.
