Those things are important in success. Sure, some people make a great start without them but what are those percentages?  Lets say someone gets some money but was never sent to Wharton, or had those contacts. Who do you think would have the upper hand?

And yea, I know that those things don't guarantee success.
Wharton isn't even a pimple on the ass of world billionaires.  Look it up.

Shit... the more I look at the list, the more I love my USC Trojans. I should have went there... not smart enough in school. That's OK. I'll take my bread an Football and be happy. ✌️😎

That's not really the point I'm trying to make.

Lets use me as the example.  I've never finished a grade of school in the same school until high school. I don't know anyone.  I was lucky to get a job sweeping floors when I was 16 and that lead to my current career.

Lets use that example in contrast to Trump.  I'm guessing that he never had to sweep a floor and knew everyone in NY real estate before he was a teenager.

Those are all great points. The one missing point though is that even with all those "advantages", he STILL had to put the work in.

He still turned $25m into $1B+. All the contacts in the world, all the real estate contacts in Manhattan, all the floors he didn't have to sweep, etc... aren't going to get you there.

I KNOW I would not be capable of pulling that off. It's only by the Grace of God amd an amazing wife I have the miniscule degree of success that I enjoy.

All that to say while all those advantages can be beneficial, they are in no way a guarantee of success and while he cannot be considered a self-made man, he's made a lot of good and smart decisions along the way.

We don't know how much work he put in. We just assume? We don't really know how much money he inherited.

All we have to go on is people who were around him and most of the opinion were.. well..  you know. :D

Given the same opportunity, are you sure?

You have lucky kids, James.

Well, considering I had 2 $10m+ relatives in the family and I had access to their smarts as a kid, yeah, I'm pretty confident in my statement. I was not smart enough to see the opportunities even after I got clean and here I am. No regrets though. Had I gone down that path I would have never met my wife.

My kids... I'm fairly certain they do not see it that way, but my wife and I sleep well at night knowing we did the best we could do.

:edit: $100m to $10m. Sorry for the typo.

One of my kids... We're SO proud of him, he's done very well for himself and his young family. He's married, 3 kids, 26 and 6 figure income is well within his reach in the next couple of years. He was homeschooled K-12. HS diploma + GED (that he pursued on his own and crushed). Eagle Scout. No college.

Sadly he's bitter AF because his wife is fanning the flames of discontentment. He's barely spoken to us this year and really has no desire to do so.

I don't mean to trivialize this, but these are small problems? You can fix this.

Take it from someone who has completely shut their family out.

It's not worth it.

100%... when both parties want to fix it. Sadly, only my wife and I want to fix it. If it were just our son, I think it would have been fixed immediately or close.

We sat down with them a couple weeks ago as they told us they were moving to another state in 5 weeks (then), we talked over some things. His (moat likely hers based on how the discussion went) perception of a specific life altering event (T1 Diabetes diagnosis and the process involved in the diagnosis). His wife (who was nobody of significance in our family at that precise moment in time) kept hammering and jamming us up about the diagnosis. She even got "excited" and said "can I tell them this part?" Anyway, there was some medical malpractice (he's just depressed, there's nothing physically wrong) involved AND a judgement call (we chose to fix the Diabetes and see how the "depression" works itself out). His wife disagreed with the judgment call and is using it to drive a wedge between us.

If we had it to do over again knowing exactly what we know now, we'd make exactly the same medical decisions. Fix what will kill you first, then work on the other thing. Triage 10 FUCKIN' 1 in EVERY FUCKIN' CASE!

The REALLY suck thing in al this... there's 3 grandkids involved that my wife and I adore.
