I don't know if he was involved or not, but seeing as the DOJ ended it's investigation into his involvement with no charges against him, only to be picked up by again by the house investigators, sure makes it seem politically motivated.

Remember, it was Matt Gaetz and four other Republicans who agreed to vote for McCarthy as Speaker only if he kept his promise to STOP the same old bullshit omnibus bills from being rammed through.

That is what led to McCarthy being booted as Speaker, remember?

So yeah, there are plenty of the 'old guard' swamp creatures on both sides who have an axe to grind against Gaetz for upsetting the apple cart, so it's no surprise that even though the DoJ COULD NOT prosecute him, the House still continued to 'investigate' the matter.
