I unfortunately know a good deal more than I can let on

This price increase was definitely giving the double tall ones  :flipbird:  :flipbird: to small shops.

I don't know what they charge for subscription maintenance but I'd go out in a limb and say that it's less than $5000 a year?
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

It's every one...in some situations, small shops, from a percentage, got hit bigger, no doubt.

I was amazed at the levels at which they now grant discounts....

Dunno, that's a conversation I haven't broached...though I was told it would be less, by how much, can't say at this point

Quote from: neurosis on November 21, 2024, 02:02 AMWe have a single seat of Mastercam (its a full seat with lathe and multi-axis) and they are charging us over $5000 a year

My personal seat is Mill3D, Lathe, Multiaxis (no millturn)  on an old school USB hasp
This year's maintenance was $3700 with no support.
20 years ago my dealer quit charging me for support, stating
"We should be paying you."
That was about a $400 increase from last year.
Back in the early days of maintenance, it barely broke $1000

Is support a separate line item on your quote?
Do you ever use support? Maybe you can drop the support charge?

I just found out that we do have a second seat of Design that is for some reason, tied to our lathe license. Apparently we don't get a discount for that second seat anymore which is why our maintenance went up so much.

I'm looking in to what it would take to get the lathe module added to the first seat and remove the second seat all together. Nobody ever uses it.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I enquired about the volume discounts for our company nethasp
We have 4 mill 3d / 4 lathe/2 multiaxis and didn't even come close to the volume discount requirements

And sort of on the same subject
The assimilation is complete

So it's another globalized merger that only benefits the ultra-mega corps? I'm shocked. What do you need? 50 seats?

Honestly, since we can't do anything about it, I feel like ordering some steak... Ignorance is bliss.

6 - Mill 3D
3 - Mill 2D
2 - Multi-Axis
1 - Wire
4 - Lathe
1 - Mill-Turn(Now have 3 but at renewal time, it was still 1)
3 - Machine Environments

We got a discount, it amounted to $1200.00

It's a g'damn grift

I don't direct this any any of the longtime resellers, most have been very vocal but their words are falling on mostly deaf ears....it goes right to the top, they simply DGAF

Oh and I have always tried to respect to overall wish of not discussing pricing....no more.

Any loyalty that had existed for longtime customers, that no longer exists. Customers are now simply a budget line item to be maximized.

The cash cow has to be milked.

I think if you follow the link in my previous post, you'll see that all the people you knew and owe loyalty to are gone.
There may be some left at your old MC dealer, but I believe that dealership was assimilated into the borg.

I had just a quick glance at the link you posted, and what struck me most was that none of these folks appeared to be mfg people, but finance/sales/mgmt folks. I don't know the backgrounds of the folks before them-help me out here, MC users!

I obviously can't yet know if this is a "good thing" or not (good for whom would be the first question to answer), but when I see stuff like this it reminds me a little of the trends we've seen in the backgrounds of leadership in companies like Boeing or our auto makers. Top mgmt used to be comprised of folks who came up thru engineering, but who are now mostly finance folks.

I wasn't around in the 80s. BUT. I have heard a lot of chatter about how corporate structures changed in that time toward counting beans instead of making them, and accountants ran the world ever since to maximize quarterlies above all else. It's so prevalent that its become a meme of itself. Hurts to see a company whose services you use and product you respect just sold off and amalgamated into another branch of a giant, wit yes-men at the helm.

We'll hear no shortage of "improving customer experience" or "tailoring our services for you!"  even "more, frequent updates". Just submit, subscribe, shut up, pay up. I'm genuinely frustrated at the direction the software industry has gone. I love em, but video game companies are to blame for real this time: World of Warcraft and Xbox Live showed every software company that millions of people are willing to shell out every month, and not own a single thing during or after.

Before 2001, how many software-as-a-service examples existed? I'm curious now.

I believe Adobe was the first mainstream company to move to a subscription licensing scheme

I remember the first CC release was effectively impossible to 'acquire', they did stop piracy dead for their software. I ran CS6 for YEARS after that, until I landed at a company that was willing to pony up for the annual cost. In that arena, Adobe neutered their last perpetual program this year, the Elements package. It's a 3 year 'lease' now for your 150 bucks. So they continue to blaze the trail.

Are they still making people sign the agreement that says anything made with Adobe is rightfully theirs to use?

They clarified and said that wasn't what the 'legal intent' was. But who knows, honestly. They have an inline "For Dummies" in the terms of use page now where they say 'we don't use your stuff to train AI unless you opt-in, or share it on the Stock Marketplace'

I LOATHE ADOBE. I don't even use their trash reader anymore.

There is a special place in hell reserved for the bean counters that came up with software by subscription only...
