H1-B Visas

A lot of chatter this weekend about H1-B visas. IMO, H1-B visas are just a tool that employers of tech positions in expensive states/cities use to hold down wages for professional tech workers. People like Musk think they deserve $50B a year themselves but expect their highly skilled workers to live off wages that are below standard of living for most of the country. For me to consider moving to work at Tesla (Cali) or SpaceX or other Musk companies in high cost of living states the pay would have to be close to $400k+ year to not have to greatly reduce my standard of living from here in MN. Don't be fooled by their cries of we can't find people. The truth is they don't want to pay what it would take to entice good people to work/live where they are located. It is exactly opposite of free market principals when it comes to labor.

I don't believe that it an either-or choice for him. He can be a patriot and get richer at the same time, or any combination of those.

Also, in 4 years of Biden his wealth has tripled, so why wouldn't he just want more of the same.

Do you think that the Clinton Foundation was started because Clinton really cared about people? If you're a democrat you probably think yes and if you're republican you probably think no. Why not just judge the actions themselves rather than the motivation? a lot of good things have happened by people with poor intentions and a lot of bad things have happened by people with good intentions.

The nice thing about H1-B visas is they must be posted including pay at the business.  At a former place I worked they hired a few under the program in IT. I don't know what a normal IT guy made there but if I recall the H1-B people were making decent money.

That's my point. In order to not have to raise wages to attract domestic skilled workers they want to bring in people from over seas that will work for current wages, which to live in a city where Musks companies are, are below standard for the country.

It's not just Musk. My wife and I have been wanting to move to eastern TN for a while. However the engineering jobs there pay 50%-70% of what I make here. The problem is the cost of living, including housing, has shot up 100%+ in TN. My house in Eastern TN would cost the same as here but the pay is half what I make here. Most of the jobs I see advertised there for engineers say they will sponsor H1-B visas.

I'm no expert on the Clinton foundation but it appears they've done a lot of good work through the years.

As opposed to the Trump foundation...whatever happened to that, btw?

Regardless, I'm not sure why we're even talking of foundations.

In the years ahead we shall indeed judge the results brought around by the intentions of many different people.

We still won't likely agree if it's good or bad because it will depend where each of us gets our "news."

that is my point. We could actually agree on whether something is good or bad if we just looked at the outcomes rather than the motivation behind it. I just used the Clinton foundation as an example to flesh out the point. but for another example, Mr Beast is one of the highest paid YouTubers there is. He has started a foundation to bring wells to Africans. That brings him a lot of publicity which only makes him richer from YouTube. But who cares. Africans villages are getting clean water.

I just see it the same way with Musk. He may only be doing all of this to enrich himself, but if he makes the government better, so be it. If he makes it worse, then he should get blame for that, as well. Honestly, I don't know that the founding fathers had great intentions of if they were just collectively hoping to enrich themselves. but their endeavors were good what ever the motivation.

You need to come down to Huntsville AL.  Get your clearance, and pick from plenty of high paying jobs throughout this area.

I'd be ok with Rocket city. My wife wanted to be closer to her dad in eastern TN, but I'm sure she would do fine in Alabama. Yes, BS in Electronic Engineering with 25 years of CNC machining and 10 years of robotics/factory automation experience.

LOL, my wife's dad is local has been in eastern TN for 20+ years. He says it is all of the rich upper east coasters that retire, sell their house NY/NJ/etc, and buy whatever they want in TN that is driving up the cost of living. They also don't get TN culture and come down looking and acting like typical upper east coast A-holes.
